:+1: observation.

MIT >> University of Minnesota.

And we haven’t had AA here in California for almost 30 years now.

On Nov. 5, 1996, Californians voted on Proposition 209, also known as the California Civil Rights Initiative. It passed with 55% of the vote, ending affirmative action in California’s state and public entities.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling the entire US won’t have AA in college admission starting now.

I’m very skeptical about that. I know I read in the last couple of years that Berkeley was trying to admit more minorities to the CS department. That isn’t happening without AA. Maybe it’s based on last names or zip codes or maybe they’re using Pell grant info or people’s essays. Just because it’s illegal doesn’t mean the UCs aren’t trying…

And if they weren’t doing AA, why is race asked on the form? Is the admissions officer supposed to ignore that???

University of California looks to ‘share expertise’ after decades without affirmative action

There are other techniques to achieve schools’ diversity goal without factoring race in directly.

The University of California has since turned to holistic review practices to make admissions decisions in an effort to maintain a diverse student body. Rather than only looking at a student’s grades or test scores, UC campuses have considered a range of factors including the location of an applicant’s school, an applicant’s socioeconomic status and an applicant’s achievements relative to the opportunities available at their high school. UC over the years has also ramped up its outreach to low-income students and students enrolled at underserved high schools.

These are proxies to race, and is the motivating factor why schools want to get rid of standardized tests. Schools want racial diversity. You can’t make them not want that. As long as they want it, they will figure out ways to achieve it without getting on the wrong side of the law.

Which means saying AA doesn’t exist in CA is a BS lie.

I don’t think it is a lie. They are considering social-economic status instead of race. Turns out the two are highly correlated so targeting SES is almost the same as race.

You can argue they should not have even considered SES and should go for test-scores only, but that is a separate discussion.

What on earth is the point of all this multi dimensional BS? Does anyone maintain those other things when they are middle aged? I’m probably one of the few who do, and most of my friends and coworkers think it ranges from weird to insane. I’m willing to bet <1% of adults actually continue with music, sports, etc past the age of 30. I can also tell you very, very few of the ones still doing it are at the top income levels.

Are you sure about this?

I still hang out with a fair amount of my Lowell group classmates today. We played softball and basketball regularly for sure well after hitting age 30. Now, some of the guys play tennis or pickleball regularly on Sat mornings. I have a regular group that plays online poker together. And yes, the vast majority of us are either early retirees or making 6 figures. The folks with kids are mostly done with them (either in college or off to the working world) hence why they have time now to hang out and do some activities again.

I’m absolutely sure. I know exactly how small adult sports leagues are. I know exactly how few of my peers at work play in one. It’s zero.

“Conformists who follow social conventions” are the ones who hold down a 9 to 5 job.

Who are the non-conformists? Hohos are non-conformists. Cops told them to get off the streets and they never conform to orders. Criminals are also highly non conforming.

Hence, startups are criminals

Yup. Thanks @manch for confirming what I’ve known all along.

Don’t forget what is not being said here - last names can tell you a lot (or at least 50% of the story)
