Anyone have kids going back to school?

We are debating. Kids do enjoy in-person and hate remote (there is no remote option btw it is more of home schooling).
We got the official email from the principal saying that our kid is NOT in the close contact. However, our concern is that if a student next class is affected in same grade, with shared play-grounds, how can one effectively determine close contact or not?

Looks like all that is followed is these guidelines:

Yeah, it’s really tough.

If I were in a similar situation, I’d have my kids stay in schools for a week or two more. If there’s indeed more than a handful cases then definitely pull them out. Cases showing up now are most likely infections that happened before school started? Meanwhile drill into my kids’ heads always mask up and avoid close contact with other people, including teachers.

But I am obviously not in your situation. So don’t want to play arm-chair general. Most likely I would be pretty freaked out.

Thanks for your suggestion. We may do the same. Don’t react immediately and see how it pans out. It is a tough situation. Not too worried about my 5th grader as she is super careful. But my son is too young to adhere (though he tries his best), and the positive case is on his grade. Also, kids eat / drink / touch surfaces & eyes. Will give them the option – be strict in maintaining distance, sanitizing hands frequently, mask up or stay home for independent learning.

It’s a no win scenario for parents. I have one in elementary (full online classes are now on waiting list after we decided to go in person this year) and one in preschool. Our preschool closed due to two of the younger kids caught covid recently which spread to teachers, other kids, etc. Thankfully, none of my kid’s class got it and my kid tested negative. My kid’s classes are older so they wear masks but others are <3 so masks are not required. They have been very strict too (no parents allowed inside, daily temp check before entrance, if anyone exposed to covid in a class, class will close and only those that tested negative can come back to the class after a few days, etc).

If covid gets worse, I guess back to nanny/private teacher time. Wife determined to take the kid out and home school. It will cost us but no choice.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It feels like there is no win and we should all be prepared for the worst & deal with it. Our school district does not have temperature checks or strict quarantine measures like you outlines. :frowning:

may be get binax antigen home test kit from walgreens or cvs. It’s not 100% accurate since it’s just antigen test but at least would alleviate anxiety.

I just read a tweet mentioning the exact same thing. It seems it’s pretty accurate.

I have 4 packs at home for guests, if they had to visit for unavoidable situation. It’s in high demand gets sold out quick. Have to go early morning to get it. I got lucky buying at noon though.

Thanks @manch @mcp. Looks like a good option – for now just going to wait and watch & be prepared.

Found them on Amazon as well. Only 2-packs. Don’t see any 4-packs.

Is this elementary school on Bay Area ?

Thank you so much for sharing .

No, it’s a preschool in Seattle suburbs but I’ve heard of 2 other similar situations in the Bay Area last year albeit safety protocols were poor then.

I meant 4 boxes, total 8 tests.

Our Kids started in-person instruction 5 Days from 4th quarter. Prior to that they were in Hybrid model from Oct last year.no major outbreaks.

This is where we’ve been ordering them from… Are you getting them cheaper? These are one test per box:

Oh looks like the CVS one is half the price… hrm

Testing seems like waste of time. Are you going to test everyday? Vaccines are the only way to go. If vaccinated Covid19 is no more lethal than the flu. In fact hardly lethal at all. We never tested for the flu. Again the media is creating mass hysteria.

I think there’s value in weekly testing. If you catch people in the 1-2 days before they’re symptomatic, you can still decrease the infection rate.

Case rate data from Santa Clara County. Case rate among 0-11 kids (purple line) is rising, even tho that of vaccinated 12+ (green line) just turned the corner.

I am really mad at FDA dragging its feet issuing EUA for 5-12 kids.

The FDA shouldn’t be rushing trials. If you really want the vaccine, you can try to enroll your kid in the trials, but a lot of parents are relying on the FDA to advise them about adverse effects and efficacy…
