They’re doing #2. And it’s not coming from the professors - the administrators get pushback from students and parents about how “HARD” all of these classes are and the professors are forced to dumb down their curriculum. I’ve heard from multiple professors on this. The kids aren’t comfortable with the math.

In the US: It’s better to be a minority woman going into STEM from Kansas.
You don’t want to be a white or Asian male going into STEM from California.
How much the grades and school reputation matters depends on what else you can offer the college in the way of sports or proficiency at playing strange instruments or legacy.
In Canada, top grades from a hard school. They actually have a multiplying factor to even out the school difficulty.
