Financial Independence (FI) - The Ideal End Goal

Working for the government would make me want to retire for sure…

Yep. But it’s paid me more than any other job. Especially when benefits are 89% of one’s salary. And, at my age, I’m not finding any employer, private or public, that’s interested in my years of experience.

I was recently rejected via email as being “overqualfied”. When I responded saying that I had never been told that I was overqualified in an email before and that if they were hiring the most qualified of the canditates being overqualified was impossible, they invited me to call them and explain why I “what attracted me to the assignment in the first place”. Which I never did because I was suspiscious that they just wanted to know how to keep people applying for positions they advertised since that was what they did as a business. Then, a week later, I got an email, thanks for applying but they didn’t see a fit letter from another HR person.

This was all by email. We never spoke two words outside of my cover letter, resume and the two emails and my single response. They’re using software to analyze submitted resumes and respond. It’s called ATS.

What a wonderful world this is.

What can I say? Prostitution is profitable.

I would never interview with an HR person…they are evil…HR is the worst thing that ever happened to American business…The whole concept is counter productive. …HR people are pysch majors that have no concept of making money…Probably why I am unemployable. …Thank god I am old enough to remember a time when there were no HR people. …Their appearance signaled the downfall of American business productivity

My Tahoe neighbor was the retired City Manager of South lake…He was bored, was the head of Rotary and always writing letters to politicians. .Just got his dream job— City Manager of Avalon on Catalina island. …At 65 he got the perfect job for him…There is hope even for government employees.

It’s even better. Some bouncy twenty something is your first interview as a “screener” for a technical position. She gushes enthusiasm and understands nothing about your specialty. She wasn’t even born when you got your first post college job. You have kids older than her. She doesn’t have a clue.

But, you have to play along if you want to get in front of the hiring manager. And, you have to be careful what you say because she might figure out how old you really are. So, don’t quote any Stones songs or mention Casa Blanca or anything like that. She’ll want and explanation when the only plausible answer to such a neophyte is, “You had to be there.” :hushed:

Financial independence is more a state of mind than bank account size…plus very location dependent. … nobody in a totalitarian regime is totally financially independent…even Putin himself…He loses power, he loses everything…including his hot young girl friends…
