Tahoe is paradise only for ski bums. You are the only person here that fits that bill @Elt1…

When a Medical “Cure” Makes Things Much, Much Worse
In 1960s Japan, a bizarre outbreak of hairy green tongues failed to set off alarms around the world
I have tons of retired friends here…Some are rich ski bums some are just comfortable…They all ski and plan to live forever…One is 97…most are over 70…The rat race will kill you…Being a bum makes more sense…
Some are golf bums too…Can golf all winter in the Carson Valley
FIRE mostly means you can fire your boss and you don’t need to work for a corporation. Self managing rental properties is indeed work, I guess you can outsource property management, but you still want to buy or sell properties, but it’s optional.
There might be different degrees of retirement. I guess I’ll never retire 100%. When I stop going to work 9-5, I would call it retirement. But I may still spend a lot of time on things I want to work on.
It’s more about financial independence than retirement.
Yes—self-control and getting rid of all sugar-based products. Unfortunately as sugar is apparently more addictive than cocaine, no one’s going to go for it.
Speaking of which… i should go get me some ice cream.

That was my understanding too–that the financial freedom to quit your job can be liberating even while you’re still working. You have the freedom to speak your mind without worrying about the consequences. Unlike a certain guy at Google. You can weather a medical emergency. You can afford to be choosy about your job.
Her medical bills surpassed insurance…
That’s horrible and saddening.
On the topic of health care… fascinating article:
In 1960s Japan, a bizarre outbreak of hairy green tongues failed to set off alarms around the world
That’s horrible and saddening.
The good thing about us immigrants is we usually have much cheaper & more social countries than united states to get healthcare from. it sucks to be away from home, from united states, for potentially years for serious situations, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Even united states natives would and should probably do it, unless it’s real emergency.
My plan is to go be a university professor or administrator.
Completely off topic from FIRE but came across this article today…
Adjunct professors in America face low pay and long hours without the security of full-time faculty. Some, on the brink of homelessness, take desperate measures
I’m wondering whether expensive pension has caused this. Sometimes, something good can lead to problems.
Speaking of pension, I think it’s the best form of FIRE.

Pensions get mismanaged. My dad’s GM pension got a big cut, and he has to pay a lot more of the healthcare premiums too. Detroit was able to get relief from pensions through bankruptcy. The safest pensions are state or federal. It’s against bankruptcy law and the constitution for a state to declare bankruptcy. If the federal government declares bankruptcy, then we’re probably all screwed.
City governments in CA seems to pay much better than state and federal governments. Experienced BA city employees get similar pay to tech workers, with a longer career and enviable pension. What’s the best major to get the high paying government jobs?

wrong, there are at least two of us!
At least for me, it’s really hard to turn my brain off, and i keep exercising my skills that i also happen to use at work.
Many people are like that.
That may be true, but you need real, big-ticket items on your resume – especially the older you get. A 10 year gap while playing around with pet projects won’t cut it.

I tend to think of what you describe as “FU” money. Not FIRE.
A $1 million nest egg has long been considered the gold standard of savings. These days, that might not be enough.
When people talk about income gap, wealth gap etc, I find that the wealth gap today is much smaller than many years ago. It used to be easier to FIRE, but it’s easier to FIRE with section 8 voucher

Ooh, is that really true??? May need to find some data on this…
but it’s easier to FIRE with section 8 voucher
Dont be naive, you only get that voucher because you need to rely on government for money. That’s a far cry from financial independence.
