Scary.
Yeah, talk about privacy, search and seizure laws, etc. that was one of the fears when a DNa database was started. You get enough people in it, and you can narrow down the suspect list pretty fast.
People don’t seem to realize - this is actually pretty bad.
I see constant mistrials and people whose lives are ruined because some detective/cop/etc found some evidence to point at them but it wasn’t certain - but as they started looking to prove guilt (and not innocance), they keep finding, and once enough of these piled up, they convicted.
It’s scary. I will never voluntarily contribute to these databases.
Also the fact that this is done without a warrant is equally scary. The thing is… they didn’t need one!
What are you guys talking about??? Shouldn’t we instead celebrate the fact that karma finally got back to this devil and brought him to justice??? More DNA samples and transparency pleeeeaaassseee…
When you have some evidence pointing to someone, and you have no other suspect, you tend to look for and find supporting evidences.
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Similar situation.
Is that an asian stance (no offense, but chinese especially seem to be more ok with these kind of things overall from what i can tell from here and outside)
We can force the hospitals to collect everyone’s DNA and build a DNA database for criminal case and medical treatment. DNA is just like your picture. Government has your pictures already, why not DNA?
Want an extreme example? you cannot frame me with my photo. You can frame me with my dna.
Another extreme example: adolph hitler. Guess what he could do with this kind of database?
Privacy is overrated. I say we have a compulsory national DNA database. Every crime can be solved in 10 minutes.
good luck with that.
You are thinking serial killer. Think of all the places where you have been on a given day.
- Your car: Used by you and your wife
- Work: 1000s of other peoples dna
- Restaurant: many people there
- a bunch of other places with many other people
There was a recent news about a mistakenly convicted man whose dna was found at the crime scene. It was so convenient to convict him.
I am not denying DNA also helps exonerate some people from their convictions, but human factor tells me “people are more likely to find what they want to find”
How making it more difficult to catch criminals make us safer? A good lawyer will bring up all those points you mentioned. Just make sure you have a couple millions in the bank and justice will serve you right.
Did i mention safety?
We also need to install more security cameras on every street corner.
I wonder how americans think of this actually now.
I wanted to create poll, but i decided against it - feel free to do it.
A cop whose crimes finally caught up to him… I’d be glad. But I guess it’s a signal of times to come and how we might have to ultra cautious about protecting our ID/DNA included.
If your hair falls to your office desk, can someone collect it and get your dna info?
After you eat at a restaurant, cop can collect your dna for criminal investigation.
I think there’s no way to protect your dna.
And there’s no way to create a database out of that without actually collecting it from me by asking. Right now there is no global database, which actually is a good thing.
