House insurance policy

I don’t know which category this goes to. I’m wondering what you guys recommend for house insurance. I know many times over on this forum, I’ve seen the number $1M coverage for accidents. Our insurance says this:

SECTION II - COVERAGES AND LIMITS OF LIABILITY
Personal Liability - Each Occurrence … $1,000,000
Medical Payments to Others … $5,000

I don’t understand why those are separate, but I’m concerned that we wanted the Medical payment to be $1M as well–ie, if someone breaks their neck on my front lawn, they should get $1M, not $5K. Thoughts?

Medical payment to others gives coverage even if you are not at fault, whereas liability kicks in when you are legally responsible.

On top of your regular medical coverage, I presume.

My recommendation is to get umbrella insurance. I find this to be most cost effective.

Then on each house insurance, carry the minimum required by umbrella insurance. For my umbrella, minimum required is $300k for personal liability on house insurance.

Also have to do the same for auto insurance; carry the minimum required by umbrella insurance.
