NIMBY against Teacher Housing in Almaden

Oh the irony of that post when this online forum is mostly people older than millennials.

This longer article has more details.

A Fierce Fight Over Housing for Teachers Erupts in San Jose - CityLab

A tad more information, but at the end of the day…

NIMBYs!!!

On the socio economic scale teachers are on par with cops and nurses. None of them can compete with tech salaries. So housing either has to be massively over built, or they need to get subsidized housing. Neither is likely

We need to take zoning power away from neighborhood NIMBY’s and cities. Wiener’s proposal to automatically upzone transit routes was a great one before it died in commitees. Hopefully we will see wiener give it another shot next year.

My friend is a nurse and she owns 2 Houses in SJ.
She started with nothing but diligently bought, updated and sold (not a flip though because she lived there for a while and sold) and in 15 years accumulated good asset. She told me that many of her colleagues own mulitiple homes in BA and/or other area. I don’t think nurses are making much less than average techies.

Nurses make less than $100k . Techies start at more.
Your friend invested a long time ago. Things are tougher now

Nurse make a lot with OT

The plan is to build new school else where. Instead just build teacher housing on the new site. I see no opposition to that. Wonder why it is never in any of the media articles.

So what’s the next step? Will the board come back with a new plan?

Do you know any rich nurses. My buddy is a cop and makes that salary. Strictly middle class income in the BA

I have a friend and a few classmates that are nurses. They all make six figures.

Any rich?

What’s rich to you? Nobody is richer than you that’s for sure.

Nurses are middle class. That means they will never be able to compete against rich Techies. The only way to afford BA real estate is to take risks and to escape W2 work. Risk takers or people with wealthy connections are the only ones who can afford a home in the BA these days

I never see techies as rich people - they are all ultimately W2 slaves.

Many have $200-$300 k salaries. I never made more that $50 k as an employee. The only way to escape the W2 trap is to invest and take risks. Most people are trapped or afraid. The average BA house is now $1m. Out of reach for people making under $200k. I can’t compete with rich Techies either. Much more relaxing living outside the SV competitive crucible.

You can’t compare ancient dollar to today’s dollar. There’s wage inflation. My cousin is a civil engineer like you - makes six figures. Would he be able to get similar pay in the 70s? Probably not.

Also not everybody is a risk taker. Likewise, the world needs to have both smart and stupid people. If everybody’s smart then what makes you special?

I My last W2 income was in 1986.

Prices today are 130% higher than 1986, civil engineer salaries are up only 100%-150%
But housing prices have gone up 5-10 times.
In Tahoe nurses get paid $80-90k
Civil Engineers $60k up to $120k
BA is unique. But even there most civil engineers make less than $100k. Average BA salary is $80k
San Francisco boasted a total city score of 3.9 thanks to its 193,262 current job openings and a high job satisfaction rating of 3.6. The median base salary in the city is $80,000, Glassdoor reports.

Starting salary for junior engineers $60k in Tahoe. Similar to 20 years ago in the BA.

Even in San Jose government associate engineers barely make up to $100k
