Do they forget how James Damore’s screed end?
Yepp that poor guy was screwed by Sundar Pichai… in the land of the free… and in the company of unbiased search information.
There you … Google isn’t even pretending any more
John McCain was a leftist?
I know for sure you’re smarter than that…
i.e. it was a Rhetorical Qn so I’ll let it be.
Just checking.
Private companies should be free to choose their own employees, besides certain legal restrictions like gender or race discrimination etc. I still think google was right to fire that James guy. We have debated back and forth a thousand times already so don’t want to go over that again.
Yeah it was a long thread.
ADDED LATER:
In that thread someone said “I would destroy Damore’s career if I was his manager or something like that”. I was convinced then it was no longer a rational discussion thread on issues, because that individual has taken it personally & I think I have a fair understanding why.
I don’t remember anyone saying that. But then I don’t have very good memory anyway.
I think a lot boils down to a misunderstanding of the First Amendment. It keeps the government from seeking revenge against speech it doesn’t like. Actually what Trump has been doing is bordering on that offense, because as president he’s a big part of the government. He can’t just take pot shots against the press and threatens it with investigations like he just did with Google.
What 1A doesn’t cover is private citizens and enterprise. Just like I can kick someone out of my house if he uses foul language, an employer has broad discretion at regulating employees’ speech. A woman got fired at her job for flipping a bird at Trump’s motorcade, even though she’s not at work at that time. I still think that’s within her employer’s power to do so.
Yet there’s people arguing NFL players have a right to kneel for the national anthem while at their job. They’re arguing the employer can’t make them stand for the anthem. The left needs to decide if it believes in free speech or not. The whole believing in free speech only if it matches their viewpoint is a joke.
It’s beyond illogical to think Google can fire the engineer, and NFL players can kneel.
The left has been intolerant since Mario Savio in 1964. Who subverted liberalism with the FreeSpeech Movement.
Liberals were tolerant in those days. The FS communists stole the liberal monicker in the 60s. Now liberals are the most intolerant on earth. They can’t even communicate to conservatives anymore. They won’t even let conservatives speak on campus. They have become more intolerant than those they hate.
PC speech has become hate speech. Hatred of all those that don’t speak politically correctly or agree with them.
Mario Savio was from the “ Silent Generation “
Who actually were a bunch of loud mouths that were tagged as boomers. Jerry Brown, Jane Fonda, Bernie,
Nancy, and most rockers. Fortunately they are starting to die off. This generation perfected using intolerance as a weapon to advocate tolerance. A truly evil bunch.
The free speech movement was rooted in the civil rights cause. Savio had wanted to speak in California at the university level and spread awareness and activism against the inequality he witnessed in Mississippi, where he had previously worked on the Freedom Summer project to help African Americans register to vote (1964) and participate in our democracy.
The Mississippi voting registration procedure at the time required Blacks to fill out a 21-question registration form and to answer, to the satisfaction of the white registrars, a question on interpretation of any one of 285 sections of the state constitution.[2] The registrars ruled subjectively on the applicant’s qualifications, and decided against most blacks, not allowing them to register.
What is disturbing about today’s use of “free speech” is the lack of substance behind its motive. The latest controversy with Google search is all because someone’s fragile ego was hurt by unfavorable results… how noble a cause is that.
The FS movement quickly corrupted into students wanting to talk instead of listening to professors. Soon the inmates had taken over the asylum and literally stole the city of Berkeley from us locals. Same happened to SF in 1967.
PC run amok
The supporters of that “FRAGILE EGO” are something I can write here, it can trigger the PC mentality they have.
They obviously want the media, and private companies to do anything and everything so everybody bows to the childman in the white house. Oh boy! They just want the news to accommodate to their views, how boring!
When you see the president, read those words, “the president” telling newspapers to fire their people because he feels annoyed because they talk bad things about him, it makes everything clear, he and his supporters hate the first amendment.
Prior to my vacation, I was almost peeing in my pants. The famous bunch of posters here were spamming my comments even though they were crying that PC was running amok in this country (to repeat what elt1 said above).
Can you believe it? They were complaining of PC and were crying like babies! And, one of them complained of “insulting and whatnot”, when asked why he didn’t direct his complaints to his leader in the white house so the SOB, women are dogs, shithole countries, and so on bad words are not heard by accident by our kids watching the news with us, well, the individual became a PC, not a single word but "hey, you are using bad language, buahhhhhh…buahhhhhhh. As if his president is using an elegant and educated language, Jesus!
If that doesn’t tell you that this is not about freedom of speech, but the fact that “they” can stand their ground, that they can’t defend “their guy”, that they can’t debate “no matter what” and, that it makes them worse than PC here and in China. Either you are up for debate, or you aren’t!
Here it is, an example of the first amendment. A guy kneeling, not saying anything, or a guy in a blue uniform asking for the extermination of Black people. For those who think this doesn’t apply to you, have you see yourself in the mirror. Don’t must of us in some form and shape look like Black people? You know I am speaking to you…fill in the blanks.

Jack Dorsey in congressional testimony:
“I think it’s more and more important to at least clarify what our own bias leans towards, and just express it. I’d rather know what someone biases to rather than try to interpret through their actions. So, if we can say that, and also have the freedom to evolve and change, then at least people know it, and I think it allows us to remove that a little bit more from the work, but it has to be proven out in our actions as well, so … I mean, we have a lot of conservative-leaning folks in the company as well, and to be honest, they don’t feel safe to express their opinions at the company. They do feel silenced by just the general swirl of what they perceive to be the broader percentage of leanings within the company, and I don’t think that’s fair or right. We should make sure that everyone feels safe to express themselves within the company, no matter where they come from and what their background is. I mean, my dad was a Republican. When I was growing up, was on the radio all the time with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, so my mom was on the opposite end of the spectrum and … Yeah, and I appreciate that, and I always felt safe to challenge both of them, especially my dad, and so it was definitely a privilege, but if we’re creating a culture that doesn’t enable people or empower people to speak up or not, we’re gonna be able to do that for our service.“
Sell GOOG, instead of focusing on their jobs, Googlers felt they are political activists.
Interesting (but long!) read about the clash between S.S.C. and the NYT. Did not know SSC is based in the Bay Area. Increasingly I think the revolt against the PC zeitgeist will be formed and led by the Bay Area.
Counterculture is in our DNA.
Gave up reading after first few paragraphs. My attention span is not that long, and the author seems unable to make the point succinctly in few words. Typical of writing styles of the Publications that have “New York” in the name.
