Yes I also believe NYC is second to none. But for young people in tech SF is the best in the world.
I will be clear, from my perspective it’s the best city for young people. Reasons are many and one of the important reason is we used to try every cuisine in this world every week or every other week. For ex, before NYC I thought Chinese food is just fried rice and kung pao chicken but I found Sichuan food like dry pot fish, dan dan noodle, dry pepper chicken and then hot pot etc. Theres’ even vegan version which I couldn’t even find in SF or BA yet let alone Minneapolis, Detroit. It’s one of my most favorite and it broke my ignorance and narrow mind. For ppl who have interest in art NYC is the best. For you or some ppl, NYC may be the worst city since you saw some filthy streets in Manhattan. It depends on what one wants to derive from a place. Both my wife and myself are from tropical place and don’t like cold weather. Weather of NYC and Boston comparison is like getting D and F grade. Both are below B and doesn’t matter whether it’s D or F! I wanted to shift to west coast for my career since opportunities are more here for tech and my wife doesn’t like cold weather. Also both no more young couple
So far there are two number one cities, there may be more though. For techies, SF, and for others NYC. I am sure on other measures, a few other number 1 cities might pop up. For example, for conventions and business shows, Orlando FL is No 1 and Las Vegas, NV may be contender for No 1 or No 2 spot. For Gambling, no one can beat Las Vegas, NV, though Atlantic City, NJ may be considered a distant second.
You cannot write a good report card of the cities you have lived in. Sorry. You just said several time NYC is not livable, it is too cold, yet it is number 1 for you. You need to set priorities and numbering right.

In denial is a way to cope with unfavorable reality
Did everyone catch this? We are finally going to fix the homeless problem once and for all. Yay!
That’s $125k per homeless person. It’s over 2 years, so $62,500/yr for each homeless person. That’s a staggering amount of money.
95% of the money will go to the homeless industrial complex…
in the Bay Area that food is found in the burbs. Dublin is an amazing hot spot of ethnic food. we don’t have any “fancy” restaurants, but amazing Korean, Sichuan, thai, Indian, south indian, Vietnamese, Peruvian, I could go on…
and yes we’ve gained weight living here. its too easy to get amazing ethnic food and its at an affordable price point…so…
I have similar experience with Chinese food. Great Chinese restaurants are in the burbs. My latest find is a new joint called Sifu Wong. It’s tucked away in some shabby hotel next to 101 in Santa Clara. SF is good for fine dining if you are into Michelin 3-star restaurants and such.
Speaking of Chinese food, I am in LA right now. I thought SoCal has great Chinese food but have been sorely disappointed. Bay Area’s Chinese food is better.
Nice good to know. Any particular restaurant you would recommend for Sichuan? Better if it’s vegan since I became vegetarian.
People in the burbs don’t go to SF just for dinner anymore. Years ago I used to go to SF to eat. Haven’t done that since parking and traffic are nightmares and you will probably have your car broken into. I guess the tourists keep the highend places afloat. Plenty of cheap food for locals I guess also. In the 80s I used to eat in SF all the time.
the amazing Sichuan near us is Lulu’s kitchen: https://www.yelp.com/biz/lulus-kitchen-dublin
but I see limited veggie options.
veggie lee in Hayward is supposed to be good. https://www.yelp.com/biz/veggie-lee-hayward-2?osq=Veggie+Lee
You always make generalizations based on what you do - we still go into SF often for meals as do many of our friends…so several data points, you still can’t beat SF food in the bay area burbs
I was going to SF for food, coffee pre-covid from Walnut Creek. Will continue this or next year if covid is reduced to a substantial degree.
Too much work for just a meal. The burbs have great food. Why spend the time and effort with a good chance of a break in. For marginally better food, nasty waiters, no parking and crappy weather. Much rather eat outside in Danville or Walnut Creek. Especially in the summer. I loved Tiki Toms… closed permanently?
Seems like it. Never went there before.
We have about 200 restaurants in South Lake Tahoe. Pretty amazing for a small town of 25,000. I am sure there are better restaurants elsewhere. But we make do. The main thing is variety. It would take years to go to all of them.
The best part is they are all within 20 minutes. Parking rarely an issue and I haven’t had a break in, which is almost guaranteed in SF.
Do people buy homes based on what kind of restaurants are around? We bought my home based upon the assumption that we will cook our meal ourselves?

No need to be so serious all the time. Idle chatting…
Anyhoo, at my age, I prefer to be near (within 5 mins drive) hospitals and major medical centers.
