Should we trust the opinion of a Master in CS?
I guess co-discovering ebola and the presence of Aids in Africa wasn’t enough fame for him?
Stock market is raging high. In earlier times, even when someone sneezes loudly in say “Libya”, the market topples.
Because every traders know, outside Hubei, hardly any cases. China has already quarantined the entire city and province. Nothing escape the lockdown. Prelim data shows avg max transmission is 2.2 persons. So if 100 infected left before the quarantine, max outside Hubei is 320 (100 + 220) or is 220, not sure 2.2 means.
Human-to-human transmission is still very rare. They should be testing animals and destroying infected ones. Testing people is pretty useless if you are going to serve them infected food.
Latest data. Red dots are daily confirmed new cases. Dropped yesterday. Downtrend seems well established.
Looks a little bit too neat? Well whether you personally believe it or not, that’s the number driving the markets.
Mr Market doesn’t believe you. At ATM.

Buy with whatever cash and margin you can employ. Xi spoke means the end of the ordeal is near.
Once outside Hubei, fatality rate dropped drastically.
Aren’t you waiting for the 10% correction?
Came and passed, you didn’t notice?
Health authorities in China’s Hubei province – the epicentre of the coronavirus epidemic – reported on Thursday 14,840 new confirmed cases, almost 10 times the number reported a day earlier, and new deaths attributable to the contagion rose to 242, more than double on the day.
Some people are playing games with the rest of us and laughing all the way to the bank. But I’m still holding on to some cash which hopefully I can deploy.
To put my conspiracy hat on, I think what the Chinese are trying to do is to make the denominator bigger in the death rate calculation. It will pull down the death rate by a lot, if they 10x the base. They may have come to the conclusion that this thing will never be completely eradicated, so to calm the public down, they have to show people the new epidemic is no big deal.
“It’s no worse than the flu” may become the new propaganda slogan.
I agree this is likely what is going on. But something still doesn’t smell right.
• China reported an additional 14,840 cases of coronavirus and 242 new deaths after overnight changes in how it counts cases. Of those, 13,332 cases and 142 deaths are a result of the change in diagnosis.
• That brings the total global count to almost 60,000 confirmed cases, and the China death tally to 1,355.
• Meanwhile, Japan confirmed 44 more cases on the quarantined cruise ship, which brings the tally to 218.
• Previously, many patients with pneumonia-like symptoms found via CT scans were not reported as positive without an additional nucleic acid test. Test kits have been sparse and unreliable, leading to the inclusion of CT-detected cases.
• Likely related, two top Chinese officials at the center of the coronavirus outbreak were fired.
• Equity futures dropped sharply as the increase in cases crossed newswires. As of 12:45 AM ET, S&P 500 futures are -0.4% to 3,368.
