Is there a cost? Generally land has to have upkeep and taxes paid. So then it’s not really free…

Also, yes in Texas if you want to send your kid to one of the UT colleges with in-state tuition.

I know a person who used to own (through inheritance) a lot of land in Tracy Area in San Joaquin county. Could not keep up with taxes. Gave up on it.
