Austin MSA vs SFBA and TX vs CA

Cool. So you’re ok putting millions of pounds of toxic waste on the road, since it’ll sort itself out.

Batteries are shit especially when comes to storing power
for the grid. Total fantasy land. The only effective way to store energy today is to pump water up a hill to a reservoir and let it out when you need it. 19Th century technology. I worked for PGE 40 years ago. Utilities are dinosaurs not innovators. They are determined to stop solar on homes. You tech guys have no clue about bureaucracy and corporate opposition to innovation.

And ICE cars don’t pollute in any way?

Right. Forgot you don’t believe in climate science.

Hybrids work. EVs are bullshit

Tell that to GM, VW and all the other car firms. For some reason they just want to build BS EV’s.

GM and VW are doing a pr campaign they don’t believe your bs either. VW has been convicted for lying about emissions
And everyone knows GM is full of shit. Listen to CEO of Toyota. At least he has the courage to tell the truth.
Here’s the deal cars produce only 8% of CO2. Hybrids can reduce that by 50%. EVs maybe 75% since they need electricity from the the grid. The 2.5% is insignificant. EVs are liberal horseshit that only a couple of people on this forum bought. musk is a scam artist.

Cars in the US are a minuscule contribution to CO2 emission
since the US only contributed 15% to worldwide emissions.
So 2.5% of that is meaningless.

Musk is also the richest person on earth.

Apparently believing in EV is good for your pocketbook.

I don’t measure a person’s character by their net worth

Both him and Bozo are assholes. I know you don’t believe in the con since you don’t own tesla

No, I’m just calling out the blatant ignorance of cheering EVs as an environmental solution. C02 can be neutralized by plants. That’s pretty easy to solve. Toxic waste is a whole different ball game.

It’s pretty tiring to see people taunting things as solutions when they don’t even look beyond the first order impact to evaluate the total impact.

This is what puzzled me too. Why is…

is better than…

I have to admit, I know very little about this issue.

However, I do believe in having renewable energy and minimize digging the ground.

you still need to dig the ground. from where the Lithium and cobalt coming from? certainly not from Elon.

Minimize  not no need to dig. Which one dig more? Lithium and cobalt or oil? Btw, I didn’t say I support or against EV. Don’t like many bloggers, trying to read into something not said.

It all depend on perspective. you cannot extrapolate US fracking example to rest of the world.
Oil and gas is highly automated in places where people not reside. it flows through in sealed pipes. transporting lithium and cobalt need trucks and ships.
you still need electricity to run factories that can transform raw materials into finish product.
just look at Electric vehicles they are on average 50% heavier for same interior size. it need larger tires and hence more rubber.

They are keeping searching for alternatives.

Batteries can be recycled.

You are right people should consider 2nd and 3rd order effects.

But in this case, you are ignoring 1st order effects.

1st order effects on respiratory and other health outcomes due to vehicle emissions and particulate matter are significant and real.

1st order effects on environment when billions of gallons of oil are leaked into the Gulf of Mexico are real.

With the current solutions, we don’t even have to look for 2nd order effects!

Perfection is the enemy of Good.

The thing is EV cars in the US won’t reduce CO2 emissions to make any difference. Less than 1% of the world’s CO2 compared to using hybrids. And I assume hybrids will become more efficient once they use lithium. No need to increase the grid. No need to convert gas stations to charging stations. No range anxiety.
EVs are still less the 2% of the cars people want.
Plug-in hybrids with a range of only 75miles will solve the problem. Already achievable. The old Volt was 40. The problem is trying to design cars by government fiat instead of with common sense. Musk has played the game with subsidized vehicles that would not exist without them.

The EV craze is driven by global warmer religious fanatics who blame every weather event on fossil fuels. Mainly because they haven’t lived long enough to remember bad weather.

Thought current vehicle emission from ICE is good enough. May not be as good as EV but good enough, right?

The EPA solved that problem in the seventies with the catalytic converter. Environmentalists never let science get in the way of a religious argument. LA had a huge smog problem. Not anymore.
China has a huge problem with coal fired plants providing electricity for EVs. Just polluting from different source.

In the US we solved the smog issue so the environmentalists came up with a new pollution concept. Too much CO2
which is not toxic and is in fact essential for plants.
It just needs to be harnessed. Plant more trees.
I have no problem with solar and wind. But without massive battery banks they are limited to 20% of total energy generation.
Natural gas will be needed for another 50-100 years. Thankfully the US has plenty.

I don’t think people realize how clean current car emissions are compared to pre catalytic converters days. Then it was further improved by better tech and locating it closer to the engine. It’s to the point we are hitting limits of the tech to measure it.

Even the evaporative emissions are so much lower. It used be allowable to have 2g of hydrocarbons per 24 hours. Now it is 0.054g.

An apple to apple comparison for your toxicity argument would be to look at the material going into the combustion engines, the gasoline itself and what’s used to extract it etc. This is what they call the whole environmental impact.

Just harping on the toxicity of batteries but ignoring everything else is bad faith.
