I guess this is one of the core problems about discourse in America today.

Discourse on topics which have zero personal costs to people. People are much more reasonable when they talk about investments for example. Disregarding facts or logic there would cost people huge sum of money. Not so with politics.

Sorry. These are not zero cost discussions. Lying, hysteria, and fearmongering by media come with a huge national and social cost. Just think about it. 6-7 Million people just lost jobs. Unemployment in the 5-6 % range. And stock market down almost 25%. A lot of people see their investments losing value or they are locked down with poor investment for some time to come. There are groups of politicians, media, and connected people who would rather see economy cash and burn then let the truth prevail.

You seem to live in your own world. Even China that has almost total control of their media and social media locked a good chunk of the entire country down under very aggressive controls to stop the spread. You think China would torpedo their economy for nothing?

Totalitarian rulers, like those in China, live under greater threat of being overthrown. The only difference is that democratic regimes have clear election cycles and politicians can play around it. In both cases, they will try to keep the pressure off the government. That is what is clearly happened. A minor issue can be turned into a big fear creation scheme. Just think about the Russian hoax.
