Why eggs? How long can you keep them?
We used to be much better.
Updated chart. In 5 days we will be where Spain is now, approximately 5k cases, 10k cases in a week.
Exponential.
So for all the crying about our response, we are tracking the same as other western democracies.
You realize we had tested 1M people, because 1M people had shown symptoms. People don’t get tested for no reason. In other words, H1N1 was spreading much faster.
The point of all these urgent calls for more testing is that there are many people showing symptoms but couldn’t get tested. We can’t contain this thing without knowing who to quarantine and trace their paths of infection.
Is it really rocket science to assume anyone showing symptoms who doesn’t have pneumonia has it? Those people should self quarantine. To act like we can’t do anything without a test is ridiculous. If anything, assuming people with symptoms have it and reacting accordingly is more cautious.
Some patients don’t show symptoms. So for anyone who shows symptoms, self quarantine for 14 days, because we don’t have enough tests to prove they are negative. How about their family, friends and coworkers? Everyone in the contact path also self-quarantine 14 days? Pretty soon we are talking about self-quarantine tens of millions of people for 2 weeks at a time. How much panic would it cause? How much economic damage will it do?
Meanwhile in Korea, with 1/7 the population of the US, has already tested 250K people, with drive-thru stations that only take 10 minutes with results available the next day.
The good news is looks like testing will be more readily available starting next week.
My sister is in residency and she said her hospital in Santa Clara county has no problem ordering tests if they deem neccessary.
A significant number of infectious diseases display seasonal patterns in their incidence, including human coronaviruses. We hypothesize that SARS-CoV-2 does as well. To date, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has established significant community spread in cities and regions only along a narrow east west distribution roughly along the 30-50 N” corridor at consistently similar weather patterns (5-11C and 47-79% humidity). …
Because of geographical proximity and significant travel connections, epidemiological modeling of the epicenter predicted that regions in Southeast Asia, and specifically Bangkok would follow Wuhan, and China in the epidemic.7 However, the establishment of community transmission has occurred in a consistent east and west pattern. The new epicenters of virus were all roughly along the 30-50o N” zone; to South Korea, Japan, Iran, and Northern Italy. After the unexpected emergence of a large outbreak in Iran, we first made this map in late February. Since then new areas with significant community transmission include the Northwestern United States and France. Notably, during the same time, COVID-19 failed to spread significantly to countries immediately south of China. The number of patients and reported deaths in Southeast Asia is much less when compared to more temperate regions noted above.
They have to realize those countries southeast of
Asia are those countries capable testing and actually reporting. I think all of the so call expert too rely on so call numbers given to them. This is why everyone is underestimate this thing.
Yes could be that many cases slipped through untested. We will have a definite answer when the entire northern hemisphere heats up in May. I am still inclined to believe covid will behave like SARS.
That’s the first good news I’ve heard about testing… at all.
The other thing is that the people who have gotten tested have sometimes had to push for 48 hours to do so. I know someone locally who had issues getting a test despite having the symptoms and doctor’s rec. I think that was last week, but it’s really not ok. I’d rather have too many people tested and know that things are contained than not enough tested and not know anything.
Also, Marcus, I don’t know what’s going around where you are, but a couple of us have already experienced things that cause pneumonia down here, and a friend said her daughter had something that made her feel short-of-breath 2-3 weeks ago–unlikely to be COVID19 unless the thing really has spread quite far without us knowing it. We’ve got a lot of other things going around down here in the schools that could look like COVID-19. I think the only way I’ll actually know that we caught it is when all of us get sick including my husband.
South Korea’s coronavirus response is the opposite of China and Italy – and it’s working
The linchpin of South Korea’s response has been a testing programme that has screened more people per capita for the virus than any other country by far. By carrying out up to 15,000 tests per day, health officials have been able to screen some 250,000 people – about one in every 200 South Koreans – since January.
To encourage participation, testing is free for anyone referred by a doctor or displaying symptoms after recent contact with a confirmed case or travel to China. For anyone simply concerned about the risk of infection, the cost is a relatively affordable 160,000 won (US$135). Testing is available at hundreds of clinics, as well as some 50 drive-through testing stations that took their inspiration from past counterterrorism drills and can screen suspected patients in minutes.
“This country has a universal health-coverage system for the whole population and the economic burden for testing is very low,” said Kim Dong-hyun, president of the Korean Society of Epidemiology. “Tests are conducted for free if you have proper symptoms.”
More like public stigma and shaming.
What do you prefer? Lockdown or shaming by your neighbors and friends?
Isn’t that what society does for you anyways? Molds you into what is acceptable?
You can ignore the expiration date on eggs, they stay good for months. I worked as a manager in a fast food restaurant and they didn’t even refrigerate their eggs. The commissary manager said they keep them at room temperature for up to two months before they ship them out and they never had a problem with them going bad.
