Google Director Builds Shipping Container Home In Menlo Park

See, @Elt1, my premonition that prefab for the Bay is coming true…

Maybe. A local tow truck driver told me he is going to build homes out of shipping containers. When I started quizzing him the less he knew. Like most ideas, they look good from far, but are far from good.

One of my good friends has neighbors that are living in a trailer in the backyard behind the main house.
Complained to the police, and building department. So far they have done nothing. If nothing happens I might put one on my 3/4 acre property. Already has two units. Something I can haul away it needed.
Can get $600/m rent. Cost $10k

Everything has to start somewhere…

Remember these???

Tech is easy to improve. Construction is difficult and has massive bureaucracy against it. We need a complete political turn around on a local level. We are oppressed by a communist regime called the TRPA. They have the authority to ruin any homeowner and do it with relish.

To, the Google Director, spent 250k for a 640sq ft in-law unit. Thats almost 2x the cost of what it would be if you had a good contractor and did things the old-fashioned way. And the time/logistics spent in using cranes to lift the unit over the house is just too much. He had good neighbors who were fine with the temporary disruption - that wont be the case everywhere.
I would love to have a prefab in-law unit just to reduce a lot of the construction crap like framing, drywall, etc. But the costs seem too high for now.
