Interesting, 101 Is Safer Than 280

It is easy to understand why this happens. The average speed on 101 is much lower than 280. You can get in more serious accidents when you travel faster.

280 is pretty dark at night. I take 280 in the day and drive 101 at night. I do feel a little unsafe on 280 at night.

I just figured less traffic on 280 and no commercial semi trucks = safer. Guess not…

The problem with 280 (first hand experience) traffic flow can suddenly stop. It happens with 101 too, but since the speeds are higher in 280, its impact could be more damaging. I have never seen someone pulling on the shoulder as they brake suddenly on 101, but it happens occasionally in 280.

Yes. This explains everything. It’s hard to get into an accident when you’re only going 20mph.

Of course what they didn’t mention is how long it takes to get to your destination. Which is why I use 280. Plus 280 is way more beautiful.

somebody joked once: 280 is unofficially called do-80.

I always take 280 no matter what (I do the commute from SF to MV 3 times a week). But like others said, people go at pretty high speeds on 280, upwards to 80-90 mph. It’d be pretty tough to brake suddenly.

I was in 280 going 75mph in my red Corvette 20 years ago.
I thought if I went 150 I could get to the party twice as fast.
I soon as that thought popped into my head a cop pulled me over. I have had 2 tickets on 280 for 75mph
Don’t Do 80

I think these days you could get a ticket for slowing down the traffic if you don’t do-80.

Sounds like LA… everyone drives either 8 or 80
Got a ticket in Tahoe going 73
Cop told me that you can’t drive anywhere in Ca at 73
Obviously never been on 280…

I won’t lie, 280 is dangerous because of sudden stops. It all comes down to respecting safe distance. When you go 80, you absolutely have to increase the safe distance. You can’t 100% depend on your reflexes to push the breaks at the right time. That’s what’s not happening today at 280, i somewhat blame it on cruise control.

I think this is where “selfdriving tech” even the least advanced ones like adaptive cruise controls shine.

All good points. I was just thinking some statistics would have played in 280’s favor (less overall cars meaning more overall better spacing = less chance of getting hit or being hit).

Plus 280 has deer and fog issues…

Wow, never seen one on the road, and hope never will.

One of my friends hit a deer once on 280…his poor Camry…

I was going 80 on 280 in the fog. Deer appears had half a second to decide to go behind him or in front. Went behind. He would have killed me in my Corvette. Probably why I sold it… Car was a death trap.
I hit a 40# deer with my parents Volvo at 55 mph
It drove the fender back so far you couldn’t open the passenger door. A full size 200 # deer can kill you.

Ok. There’s no argument that you are more likely to hit a deer on 280 than 101…

Wow I’ve never actually seen a deer on 280, and I’ve driven late night a few times…but I’ve always heard the stories. When do you guys usually see them?
