Lack Of Diversity In The RE Industry

The Redfin agent I used is Asian. He’s awesome.

“Five percent of the country’s 1.3 million Realtors are African-American, 5% are Asian and 9% are Hispanic, according to the 2017 Member Profile published by the National Association of Realtors.”

Percent of population vs. percent of realtors
13.3% vs. 5%
5.7% vs. 5%
17.8% vs. 9%

Asian representation is very close to their percent of the population.

Not reading the article, since most RE agents are inactive, did they look at the percentage of active agents by ethnicity. Majority of my completed transactions were with Asian agents (both Chinese and Indian)

Ok, would you read this? :grinning:

Intersting article. Seems to me the most important fact is this:

"With low black home ownership, African Americans are less likely to need the services of real estate agents and less likely to think of real estate as a potential career.

Also, real estate is all about connections. Black agents starting out are at a disadvantage because they’re not as likely to know wealthy people."

That said, I feel like RE has a low bar for entry for those who do want to try. I get that there’s less of a cushion because you’re self-employed, but if someone can live with their parents, they can give it a try. It’s not like they need to get a 4 year degree at a top name college to land a job.

Also, blacks do have a large networking system through churches… The biggest problem is probably that there are not enough clients.
