Why does one have to choose, just because that is how it is presented in the Matrix series?
I would take both the blue and red pills - I.e., invest steadily beginning from 20s and continue to work till 65 or even beyond if one’s health and skill set allow for it.
Once one accumulates a 7 figure portfolio with a healthy mix of tax deferred and post tax assets + at least one prime RE with adequate equity in it, then one can work on their own terms without getting intimidated by anyone or any politics etc. For example, if one has 3-4 years worth of living expenses socked away in post tax brokerage account, then there is no need to fear getting laid off because you can wait out even a pretty deep recession and get hired again. So, work like a reassured boss and bosses will respect you and not mess with you.

Btw, in Matrix Resurrections (latest), the movie keeps repeating, “Choice is an llusion”, “You call that a choice?”, “You have decided what to do”… may not be the exact words
I observe that while you accuse me of being too theoretical, you do not dispute my theory that you can choose to take both the blue and red pills in career/lifestyle balance. Just don’t take too strong blue or red pill, be balanced.
The “choice” is intended to be mutually exclusive. Ofc, in reality, you can have various mix of red and blue… saying so is so theoretical and miss the point of which one you preferred most. For example, you can choose 60% red, 40% blue, so preferred red. Get it?
You either know the truth or you don’t.
Sorry to add another item to the long repertoire of theories.
According to eastern philosophies (of Hinduism and Buddhism), the life is an illusion (Maya). So whatever choice you are making is based on illusion. This films seems to be just rehashing an old age idea.

MSFT and META were focusing on making VR, and AAPL has been saying AR, now both are rushing to do what AAPL is doing? Look like META is now poaching AR talents from AAPL and MSFT. Mark Zuckerberg has single handedly started the fast appreciating pay of SWEs in 2011 (thus the rapid rise in prices of SV housing) and is now repeating the same for AR talents… guess is also responsible for recent few months rocketing prices of housing in SV. I notice Redfin and Zillow estimates of my two CU SFHs have been rising very fast since Nov last year. My guess similar happen in other cities where FB has a large presence.

I have noticed this as well. Redfin and Zillow estimates of my house went up by $300-400k from Oct to now.
