Redfin now lets you buy without an agent. It only does this in certain markets and the bay area is not one of them, but for its great for southern California and the central valley. To buy you can bid only on Redfin listings and you have to fill out a fifty question form first.

Sounds awesome! Most countries don’t need two sets of agents for a transaction, and our commissions is out of the world expensive as a result.
I think a real estate agent is not legally required to complete a transaction in California. Two people can sit in McDonald’s and sign a sale deed (or convey a property).
