Secular inflation is here

Didn’t do any DD so don’t know whether what he said is true. Wondering.

Why are there rampant speculation in commodities?

What about detachment of wage spiral from supply chain disruptions? Wage spiral has gathered steam. That is, even if all the three reasons he cited has gone away, hyperinflation would still be around.

There’s speculation in commodities, because there are derivative contracts traded on exchanges. It happens from time to time. At some point, companies build enough inventory to call the bluff and not need to buy the closest expiring contracts. Then it collapses.

An acquaintance back in Sacramento tried to get on food stamps. She was denied. The reason? They look at assets, not just income. Her 2014 motorcycle is now worth more than she paid for it. So she’s going back and forth between selling it and taking the food stamps or keeping it as it’s the surest most cost efficient way to get around.

Are you sure it’s for CalFresh? I helped many apply and know many people on the program with vehicles and they all qualified. Is her income too high?

Resources

A resource is something the household can draw upon or sell for financial assistance. Most households are not subject to the resource limit. The household types that are still required to meet eligibility requirements for resources, resource limits for those households, and the type of resources which are considered are listed below.

Which households are subject to the Resource Limit?

Resources are counted only for those households that :

  • Contain a member who has been disqualified from participating in CalFresh because of an Intentional Program Violation,
  • Have a head of household does not comply with work requirements,
  • Have any member of the household has been convicted of certain categories of drug felonies

What is the resource limit for those households?

Households that fit one of the three descriptions above are subject to a resource limit of $2,250. If they also have a member who has a disability or who is 60 years of age or older, the resource limit is $3,500. Any countable resource will be added to the household’s resource limit when making an eligibility determination.

What types of resources are counted?

Households that fit the description in section 1 above will need to report the following types of resources:

Liquid Resources – Includes all funds readily available to the household such as cash on hand, money in checking or savings accounts, savings certificates, trust deeds, notes receivable, stocks, or bonds, non-recurring lump sum payments [which includes retroactive payments, funds held in an individual retirement accounts (IRA) and funds held in accessible Keogh plans].

Non-Liquid Resources – Includes personal property, buildings, land, recreational properties, and any other property. The value of non-exempt resources shall be its equity value, which is the fair market value less encumbrances.

Excluded Resources – Resources which are not counted are the home and surrounding property, vehicles, household goods, personal effects, resources with an equity value of $1500 or less (excluding financial instruments), and resources with a cash value that is not accessible to the household (such as irrevocable trust funds, security deposits on rental property, etc.)

Thanks; I’ll ask. Right now her income is a bartending gig a couple nights a week. She also gets some unemployment due to a recent layoff.

Her income might be too high.

Most CalFresh households are subject to a gross income determination test. Gross Income is all non-excludable income from any source including all earned income and all unearned income. The maximum gross allowed is 200% of the Federal poverty level (FPL). Below is a chart of gross monthly income for 200% of the Federal poverty level by household size.

This is the easiest place apply. It’s a simple site but it works really well. Takes less than 10 minutes. It will send all the information and documents to your local county.

Thanks again. Her unemployment might be putting her over; I think even with a part time gig she gets something like $400 a week.
We have a food bank here in Pine, AZ. I told her to look into those. Lots of fresh healthy produce in ours and no application necessary.

I don’t know Sac area but plenty of food banks/pantries with 0 requirements in my neck of the woods Alameda County. She should definitely look into it if she needs the help.

But honestly, bartending is pretty decent money. $400 is like one busy night in many places…It’s not very hard to average $30/hr+ as bartender

But of course, I don’t know what else is going on in her life…

I paid 40k for mine in December but it wasn’t a Prime. Got a fairly decent 5k trade-in for a car with 150k on it and some wear. Glad I did that now. If supply chains are stressed already think what a war will do.

This can’t end well if people can’t afford 5 year loans…

Cars come with 10 year warranties now though. Cars last longer. Granted, every time we extend payment terms it ends up leading to higher prices. The housing boom has its roots in switching from the 15-year to 30-year mortgage in the name of increasing the home ownership rate. All it did was launch a multi-decade run of home price increases.

Good news for landlords and debtors.

Felt like I did my part. Got rid of a car :red_car: and truck :pickup_truck: . You’re welcome

A New Brand of Sticker Shock Hits the Car Market

With vehicles in short supply, prices are skyrocketing. Last month, 82% of new-car buyers paid more than sticker price.

Ride bicycle?

If you go to poorer neighborhoods, you tend to see lots of cars on the streets and driveways. That’s me. I still have an old SUV :oncoming_automobile: , truck :pickup_truck: , and a broken car :red_car: in the driveway even after getting rid of my Tesla and other truck.

I’m one of those people but I’m trying to be better.

No bike :bike: since I was a teenager. I don’t live in nice bikeable areas and I don’t want to drive somewhere to bike…But I often rent bike when I travel. It’s a different way to explore.
