Singapore Is That Good

You’re more than savvy… I would think you see the potential (finally realized, maybe) of investing in Malaysia. Sure, many hands up to now seem to have been burned, but tomorrow is another day.

Chinese manufacturers are moving out of China and into Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. These four countries are closer culturally and more familiar to Chinese, than say Pakistan or India. These manufacturers are moving partly because of cheaper labor costs, but mostly because of Western companies’ pressure to diversify supply chains out of China.

Malaysia is at the top end of these four countries in terms of their technical capacity. I think we will see more electronics and lower end semiconductors moving out of China into Malaysia.

So the history of Asia development looks like this:

Japan → Four Little Dragons (South Korea, Taiwan, HK and SG) → China → Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand.

Final stop India?

Someone from Goldman Sachs should give these four countries a shorthand name. Of the four I am most bullish on Vietnam.

BTW this is what Ho Chi Minh City looks like now. Blew my mind when I first saw the photos.

For Singaporeans who own three properties, no point buying another property in Singapore unless you fancy paying 30% ABSD. If already own one, need to pay 20% ABSD… whatever, hard to make $ for the next 5-7 years.

Def on the rise, but my buddy who is actively buying/selling properties there now says it is the wild west there. Corruption and scammers everywhere. You really need someone 100000% trustworthy to invest with there confidently. Healthcare quality, language barrier (English) and infrastructure would need to really improve (and it should). Those things I feel I can get now in Malaysia.

Yup. Malaysia is the most developed of the four countries I mentioned. I also agree Singapore is not worth the expense. If you are not saving a huge chunk of cash moving overseas why even bother? You could just as well stay in the good old US of A.

Well, since we don’t have kids we do need to think about who gets our dough. My wife is probably eying her nephew and niece in Singapore, so if we can somehow give some of that to them before we kick it that may help them some. That is also why I think investing in a nice place in Malaysia makes sense too. They can def keep that for future generations.

Move fast. Many Singaporeans are buying vacation homes in atas neighborhoods in Malaysia.

.

That is, if you’re not rich enough and smart enough :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Well, cosmopolitan lifestyle or country lifestyle, your preference.

Bay area is a good mix of both. Easy access to great food and culture, while also gives you the peace and quiet if you stay in the suburbs. Perfect.

Want to come back to have a piece of good life back?

Hey @sfdragonboy looks like Malaysia is going to get crowded.

The article says both Thailand and Indonesia also want a piece of the immigrant pie.

That is why I am planning to go house hunting in Oct or Nov. I need to buy that 180 degree seaside condo before all the damn Chinese (oops, I’m one, sort of) come.

These nations always copy Singapore policies.

The Bay Area has never really been known for culture like say NYC or London or many European cities. Few people hop a plane to go to a cultural event in SF or SJ. There are no really world class museums or performance centers. When entertaining people for out of town my family used to drive down to Monterrey for their aquarium, which is world class, and just to see the coast.

What??? Plenty of outsiders come to the Fab 7x7 for many “cultural” events. Did you forget the following:

  1. Bay to Breakers
  2. Outside Lands Music Festival
  3. The Hardly Strictly Blue Grass Music Festival
  4. Chinese New Year Parade
  5. Fleet Week with the Blue Angels
  6. Golden State Warriors (sorry, Sharks suck to high heaven)
  7. SF Giants (yeah, they kinda suck too, for now…)

Come on, we may be down right now but I would not bet against the Fab 7x7 from rising again!!!

Dude, if the US copied Singapore on gun control and capital punishment for drugs and serious crimes I could see it prospering beyond belief. You literally would have everything you could possibly want. Opportunity, freedom, and safety!!! Pipe dream, of course…

No people fly to SJ for cultural events, but plenty do come to SF. You are mistaking being the best vs being good.

We also have some unique stuff nobody else in the world has. Have you ever visited the Folsom Street Fair?

Culture is more than just dead white people stuff like symphonies.

If you two want to throw in stuff like this any BF nowhere town in he US can come up with a few music festivals and some offbeat stuff. Payson AZ gets more people to its rodeo than a lot of this stuff gets to SF.

It’s no different than people in NYC thinking they are worldly when they never leave the island.

Well SF has all the dead white people stuff like opera and symphonies and they are first rate stuff. May not be the best in the world but they are top shelf stuff.

But we also have things that are unique to ourselves. There are only four Japantowns in the US and the Bay Area has two. One in SF and one in SJ. I have been to the one in SJ and sadly it’s garbage. The one in SF is real deal. And we have the biggest Chinatown in North America here in SF.

Very few places in the world where you can the best taco in the US and walk a few blocks and get the best Chinese bbq.

If you don’t appreciate any of these little life pleasures that’s fine too. Different things for different people.
