Tariffs

I think this occurred during covid too…companies stopped providing guidance for one quarter

CarMax, the car dealership chain, said on Thursday it could no longer provide “timeframes” for its business goals because of economic uncertainty. “We are focused on growing the business, and we continue to make progress toward our long-term goals. However, we are removing the timeframes associated with them given the potential impact of broader macro factors,” the company said. Analysts expect that the 25 percent tariffs on imported cars that went into effect last week is likely to raise car prices, lower sales and cause other disruptions to the auto industry.

I don’t think even Apple can provide guidance. Does even Tim Cook know how much the price of iPhones will be in 2 weeks?

Last time I bought a MacBook, Apple shipped the thing directly from China. A high end MacBook Pro retails for $5k. So assuming it cost Apple 3k to make that machine, it will cost Apple over 7k after tariff. How much will Apple sell that machine for? 10k? No one will buy. Sales will go to zero.

We will go to recession for sure. And it’s because of one crazy man.

Five Below is halting all shipments from China.

It will go out of business soon?

I saw someone post about how they use Vietnam as middle man to avoid tariff. Vietnam is making 10% profit out of it.

US trade deficit with Vietnam: 120B
Vietnam trade deficit with China: 80B

Yeah there is a lot rerouting going on. Saw some Chinese guys on Twitter said they provide the service to reroute thru SE Asia.

Bond yield surging again.

Bulk is imports by American-owned/affiliated factories.

Xi is having a tour in SE Asia next week. He will visit Vietnam.

Got the sense Chinese people are mad at the US and are ready to eat bitterness to beat Trump. Trump has no cards. Theoretically US the customer side has an upper hand on China the supplier side. But Trump played his cards so poorly he is just one or two more bond scares away from folding. Xi is waiting for the high prices to hit American consumers.

Trump will now hike to what? 300%?

Xi’s strategy seems to be to accelerate the pain felt by American consumers and companies.

China did put down an off ramp though. It said it’s going to ignore further tariff hikes from the US. Will Trump take that off ramp?

China strikes back with 125% tariffs on U.S. goods, starting April 12

.

Exactly. Matching the hike is to annoy Trump.

Trump is like a teenage girl. She won’t call first.

Now she is explicitly telling you to call her. She desperately wants the call.

Except Trump is not a teenage girl. He is the president of the biggest economy in the world. He is ruining the lives of millions to play these stupid games.
