online internships allow remote opportunities… good for hte middle of the US that might want a tech internship with someone on the coast.

What’s going to be the point of a booster in March??? The booster barely does anything for you for Omicron. By March we’ll have some other variant that’s even farther removed from the original variant that the vaccines are addressing.

For Many in the West, Working From Abroad Is the New Working From Home

With offices mostly shut and face-to-face meetings rare, some are escaping Europe’s chilly north for the Mediterranean coast

Take a look at the disclosures, which were added to the “Risk Factors” section in each company’s 10K filings with the SEC this week.

Amazon:

“In addition, changes we make to our current and future work environments may not meet the needs or expectations of our employees or may be perceived as less favorable compared to other companies’ policies, which could negatively impact our ability to hire and retain qualified personnel.”

Pinterest:

“Our future work strategy and our continued efforts related to employee onboarding, training and development and retention may not be successful. Further, our future work strategy is continuing to evolve and may not meet the needs of our existing and potential future employees and they may prefer work models offered by other companies.”

Intel:

“Competitors for technical talent increasingly seek to hire our employees, and the increased availability of work-from-home arrangements, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has both intensified and expanded competition.”

PayPal:

“The loss of the services of any of our key personnel, or our inability to attract, hire, develop, motivate and retain key and other highly qualified and diverse talent, whether in a remote or in-office environment, or address the safety, health and productivity of our workforce could harm our overall business and results of operations.”

I think hybrid model of work will be the most popular way, with 1-2 days per week in the office and attending key in-person meetings, esp for those wanting to advance into management ranks. For this reason desirable East Bay communities like Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon etc will appreciate faster than South Bay towns in the future.

Most of knowledge workers are generally self-driven, motivated, and disciplined workers. They do not need the kind of supervision that slaves of 18th century needed.

If I’m an investor choosing to invest in two companies with equal talent whose only difference was remote work vs in-person, I would invest in the in-person team 100% of the time.

My biggest reason would be faster and better decision making. I also theorize that remote workers have less loyalty to their companies. I actually think that is the biggest driver of the great resignation amongst tech workers.

I would agree with this. If I’m an IC, I would love to work remote full time but if I’m a CEO/Founder, the only reason I would go all remote is due to the cost or talent availability. I manage an eng team and I would not generally agree to a full remote team. I want them on site more than half the time. :eye: :eyes:

You are totally missing out on the spontaneous hallway conversations that lead to a creative solution. Going to an office is not just about showing presence or supervision. It is much more than that.

I can understand the groups can benefit from serendipity, but I just want to understand how much the benefit of fact-to-face interaction is overstated. It is the quality of collaboration that counts, not the medium (online, metaverse, or onsite). Personally I would like to go to work at office so that I can meet my coworkers and bosses once in a while. That is more to meet my social needs. 2-3 days a week of face time is what workplaces will likely evolve to.

Social needs are important! Sure, we don’t love All of our coworkers but some are awesome. I made some good friends, some good work friends, work girlfriends :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: , and etc all at work!

I get shit done but I love just hanging out during lunch and happy hours. Work 10 hours, happy hour, and then dinner or basketball. Rinse and repeat. I get some people with kids need to be at home early but plenty of my coworkers hit those happy hours often even with kids.

People seriously just go to Work to work all the time? Boring.
