Leah didn’t expect her TikTok video about a work-from-home hack to go viral. She started using a mouse mover—a small device placed under her computer mouse, to keep the cursor active—after her job as a business lead in advertising transitioned to remote work at the start of the pandemic. Her company-issued computer set her status to “away” whenever she stopped moving her cursor or got up from her desk for more than a few seconds, and with three kids at home who needed help doing remote classes during school lockdowns, that little “away” signal was driving her nuts.

Most companies rate their employees for what they produce. But they need to know who actually is working so that they can budget the headcount accurately.

In one of my communication project, I presented that the meetings are the biggest time wasters. Poorly conducted meeting means having no agenda, or agenda not sent before meeting, or people coming unprepared to the meetings, conversation hijacked by one or two people, dead moose in the room never gets talked about, and some people never speak up for the fear of group attack. No follow up on the action items.

In an effort to make things more inclusive, most companies increased the number of meetings and the number of attendees. All it accomplished was causing burnout. I find that since covid people schedule less meetings, since there’s no need to appear busy in the office.

We need a group meeting to discuss how meetings are time sink!

Most meetings should only happen if there is a conflict or if there is a big presentation (I wouldn’t call those meetings btw). Also, most meetings should be resolved within 30 minutes. Otherwise, it’s much better to have a live doc for consensus as those are much better for record keeping.

It’s interesting. Interns want an in-person experience. It’s a clear preference for most of them. Despite what any company says about internships being in-person, it’s all subject to change due to Covid. Office opening dates keep being pushed back.
