This is where to go in SF. It is a drinking town, time to get busy. …Fugetaboutit the food…dont forget Uber…no drinking and driving…lol
Is that the best response you got? A chain restaurant from another place? Hate to remind you, but SF is considered #1 or #2 (NY is always in the conversation) as the food capital of the nation. People come here for the food experience alone.
My lord, would you please provide any, I mean any article from the vast world wide web that hints, even suggests that San Jose is better than San Francisco? Nada. Zilch.
SF = Sophia Loren/Lauren Bacall - ageless beauties
SJ = Phyllis Diller on her best day
Gertrude Stein was actually drunk at the time. When she said, “There is no there, there…” she really meant San Jose, not Oakland.
The reality is that San Jose is just a suburban sprawl city that got big (recently) on the coattails of Silicon Valley. You don’t produce anything or have anything remarkable that people would want to come to San Jose for. Why hasn’t the downtown area of SJ been redone to take advantage of all that money? @manch, how are you doing with the 3 things that anyone in the country or world for that matter would want to come to San Jose for? Hard, I know. You would be lucky to find one thing.
Besides, @manch, how can you rip on a city that you moved to? No good parent would move his family especially with his children’s future on the line to a worst city. So, the fact remains that you moved to SF because you felt that the city was better for your family (children especially) in the long run than San Jose, correct? Is it a fair statement to say that if you really, really believed that San Jose was better for your children in the long run you would not have moved up North? Your honor, SF rests and by a long shot…
Bingo! I am already in Hunters Point. Yes, it has the best weather in SF, but that’s a pretty low bar…
I agree it has the best potential for appreciation. I will concentrate buying in this area.
I will give you one thing SF is better. There are more attractive people here. Truth be told I met my wife in SF. Too bad I am not on the market no more…
Sounds like we both did well in the spousal selection line when it was our turn. Yes, many pretty gals enter and exit our lives at many points of our lives but at this point at least for me I know that I can’t keep up with a 25 yr old even if I wanted to. I might actually want to sleep…
SF has the benefit of being around much longer and having a much more rich history. A classic boom and bust town built during the Gold Rush that is considered the gateway to Asia. A truly international city that ranks high on many folks’ wish lists to visit. Do we have issues? Absolutely. Are people still coming? Absolutely and apparently loving it according to our Travel Bureau numbers.
Sure, I can debate with my New York cousins all day as to which city is better (SF) but I do have to admit that NY has the history as well and the cache. The idea that one can have a 5 star meal at 3am is pretty damn awesome. My whole thing about NY though is that if it is such a revered city that it should be THE leader in terms of cutting edge laws/legislation and new processes and things for the world. Hardly the case right? If anything, SF is known to be the cutting edge city that the rest of the world emulates. I like to think of it as old money (NY) vs new money (SF) and I really believe this region really (not just SF) is destined if not already to be THE place to be in the world. The things that come out of this region, from Napa wines to Tesla super cars, is simply amazing. Everything related to the internet is here and the rest of the world is gobbling it up.
San Jose obviously has achieved a milestone with the $1M average home sale but in order for it to be become a world class DESTINATION city it has to really build out its town and that would take a long, long time. And frankly, that may not happen and it sounds like some of you guys prefer that which is fine. But then don’t be insisting that you can tangle with the big boy towns like SF cuz you can’t.
Sorry to break it to you @sfdragonboy but SF is no longer hanging with NYC in food. LA is.
I actually follow a few Chinese food bloggers in SoCal. I must admit they beat us hands down. I have been thinking of visiting LA just for the food. Rumor has it that LA has beaten Vancouver to take the “Best Chinese Food in North America” crown.
While Chinese food may be our focus, there are vastly other types of food out there in the land and LA is not in the league with SF and NY overall. You need to read Bon Appetit more. I should know. I work with a lot of people from LA. None of them, actually wants to debate with me regarding restaurant strength. Sure, Chinese food may be better. Fine. Last Thursday, I took a young hipster coworker from LA to San Tung for chicken wings. He is a big time foodie. Ate here during the rest of the week at places way above company per diem (he paid for them he said out of own pocket). He is part Korean, so he heard my raving about those chicken wings and so I had to take time to take him there. One bite, shut him up. A plate of wings consist of what 10-11 pieces? I ate 3 only because I wanted him to enjoy a piece of nirvana. I asked him, there are versions of this in K-Town or LA right? He matter of factly said, no, not as good as these. Sometimes, the smart ones stay quiet when he/she knows he/she is beat.
Chicken wings is not exactly healthy…lots of fat…not good for a steady diet…lol
And I highly doubt how Chinese these wings are… ![]()
If everbody just eats the wings, what do you do with the rest of thw chicken…Like baby back ribs they cost $5/lb and the loin meat costs $2…I will take the the pork without the bone all day long…All a wing is is skin fat and bone, where is the meat?..rather have breast meat…much healthier
For someone that I respect, how can you render any opinion about something if you have never tried it???
(Sounds of crickets…)
And I am sure you live your life by only eating green salads and not indulging moderately speaking.
Again, 5000 plus reviews. More than all of the SJ chinese restaurants combined in terms of reviews with room to spare. How is it that people literally SHUT UP when they taste the wings finally?
In absolute terms, I think there are way more Chinese in LA than SF or SJ. Sorry, too lazy to verify
First step is to stop eating carbohydrates such as noodles, rice, and its derivatives, soda and deep fried food.
Second step eat only one serving size.
Talk about what type of meats to eat later… actually can don’t care about it since doing first and second steps are already too hard.
Number aside the astronomical rise of RE price hurt restaurants. Cooks and wait staff need to live somewhere. In my old neighborhood restaurant in San Jose, almost everyone is a refugee from SF. They can’t afford a piece of American Dream in SF so they move to the suburb. If real estate price continue to rise even San Jose will lose its good cooks.
Part of it is also the tremendous competition in SF. My sister-in-law’s sister’s restaurant is doing very well on the Marin side (4+ stars, and already nearly 300 Yelp reviews only after about 2 years biz). The food can stand on its own imho in SF but according to the sister she says the high incomes of marin coupled with the fewer competitors make her restaurant an easier venture to make a go of. No doubt, line out the door even before opening time.
You’ve found the answer to this common refrain!
