This most visible recent failure of SF bayarea. Not providing leadership in Vaccine/Cure race.
There plenty of hints else where like. large infrastructure cloud projects going Seattle based Miscrosoft/Amazon.
5G projects are not from here either
we have some local success with Nvidia/Tesla/AMD. but that more function of its global ties than things local.
Most of my money for the last 10 months was spent on
- Doordash / Uber eats / Postmates
- Netflix / Youtube / etc
- Zoom / Hangout (via corporate membership)
- Slack (via corp membership)
- Just got a new macbook with apple silicon.
and all these tech stocks are hitting ATH despite the rest of miserable economy.
We’re not doing as much as we should be to tackle covid19, but we’re far away from being “behind the race”. And what race? Pfizer / moderna won’t make a huge win with their $30-a-pop pills, and that’ll take years. But as the vaccines become available, other stocks will shoot thru the roof (uber, lyft, airbnb, airlines, expedia,…).
I agree that California is governed very poorly, but that has always been the case, and Californians still stuck around over all these years. Think about the people who are propping up the economy in bay area - majority of them are recent immigrants, and they won’t move away. OTOH, if all 25 year olds from Wisconsin are moving from SF to Portland, that doesn’t matter - we’ll just backfill them.
Why is SFBA expected to race or take leadership in this “race”?
Dangerous thinking just like @manch
H1Bs? They are not allowed to stray far away.
So why is TSLA popping?
Tesla sales are down and stock values went up ten times in one year. Obviously the stock market is based on hype and not reality. But reality is that California has had a housing shortage for 50 years. Caused by government regulations and the population doubling. A shortage of 4 million homes that cannot built fast enough. So even if there is a tech slow down demand will out strip supply.
Rhyme with Dotcom The main difference is Dotcom companies make no revenue. Today’s hot stocks make no earnings but make “huge” revenue
Caution: Don’t bet against the CROWD.
True but people dare not stay in condos/ apartments/ hotels/ motels during this pandemic and probably for awhile after availability of vaccine. SFHs number one
Well if that’s the case it will be heavily shorted but that’s not the case.
Most of Tesla’s R&D is based in the Bay Area if I am not mistaken. Heck, a good number of their cars are still made in the Bay Area.
SF bayarea has untill recently the highest priced employees and most Biotech talent around here. it expands all the way to NorthBay and East Bay. apart from traditional areas of Peninsula.
Apple 50% supply chain around China. There is no way SF bayarea can create spill resistant keyboards, battteries, display panels. Try replace Apple display panel without warranty.
The rest of apps have local versions in several countries.
Trade surplus of such nature benefits Americans. Trump is just using it as an excuse to destroy China’s image in Americans so as to “bring down” China ascendancy. Americans are essentially paying hardworking Chinese with depreciating dollars which Fed can print at will. The real problem in USA is not the trade surplus. Is how to reduce Americans dependency on easy money.
It depend what you consider most. The chip design and manufacturer is in Texas.
I am sure all the display screens, Cameras, memory chips, tires, batteries and all the wirings will be who ever supplied them.
Tesla charged extra $10K for self driving if thats what you referring to most. but that is separate line item. and not many people buying it. . I looked almost 300 used Teslas for sale on Cars.com. very few percentage have that full self driving.
The big machine is from Italy.
To me, the biggest plus of Biden presidency to the Bay Area economy is the reversal of Trump’s immigration policy. We can’t be the world’s premier innovation center without attracting the world’s best talents. Immigrants are self-selecting high achievers. Instead of sitting on their ass they uproot themselves and move thousands of miles for a shot at a better life. And we get a great number of them here in the Bay, especially the smart ones.
thats the point. When other countries are making so much money plus world class infrastructure and bettter air travel connectivity. they are more than likely can afford best pay to attract the brightest people.
so if California lose bright people to Texas. There is no guarantee the overseas replacement will be of same calibre. it is accelerated decline that is showing up in Biotech. .I have doubts Europeans/Chinese will work for Indian managed firms if they are bright in there field.
Praising yourself? Don’t be so obvious. I tag along so can’t be classified as high achievers.
Go back to China ofc. One very visible example is Robin Li.
Your wife is the high achiever then.
A large number of immigrants have no critical skills and work at minimum wages. Many of them live illegally. The immigrants and the value they add are glorified way more than their actual contribution would demand.
I don’t think people care about their managers race much here.
And BTW all tech companies in Bay Area are Indian managed. Almost all low, mid managers are Indians and they are now popping in exec to CEO levels too. Microsoft Google IBM etc. Indians are great followers and very adjusting so founders, BoD love them plus most Indians want to become managers so they coach in this direction early on. There are very few truly great Indian engineers as a result but many good managers. OTOH there are many gifted White and Chinese engineers with no patience for the BS that goes on in management. In the end it forms a good symbiotic situation.
I agree that in China or Europe they won’t tolerate Indians with lower technical expertise and acumen to become senior managers.
Early on in my career, I was told success is 10% due to aspirations, !0% due to inspiration, and 80% due to perspiration.
If you could define a good engineer, I could tell if Indians make a good engineer. Just so that everyone is clear of the difference between an engineer and a researcher. An engineer’s job is to finish a product meeting market requirements in time to market. A researcher’s job is to uncover the hidden knowledge without adhering to a very hard and competitive deadline. For example, my director used to joke about Facebook as a weekend project of a college senior. But, as a company, it has grown way beyond and turns over billions of dollars. Facebook is not product of scientific research, but a very successful product nevertheless.
I am writing from perspective of new people in Europe and China who never been to California.
They have plenty of opportunity in there own countries now instead of coming here and conform to bay area work culture.
It is in addition to all the negative press created with enviornmental degradation and wealthy fleeing out of california.
