San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced during a press conference Wednesday that over 100,000 residents in her city have applied for unemployment insurance over the course of the coroanvirus pandemic.
According to 2018 estimates, the city has a population of 883,305 — meaning one in nine San Francisco residents has applied for unemployment insurance.
"While from Day One we have focused on confronting this public health emergency, we have also been taking a significant economic hit at the same time,” said Mayor Breed. “With over 100,000 San Franciscans applying for unemployment and an uncertain timeline for recovery, we are in for a long, hard road. This is going to require a lot of tough choices and creative solutions, but I’m confident that we can do the work it takes to get San Francisco through this.”

Don’t see Austin on the list… Singapore is behind a 2nd tier city Hangzhou? Not to mention Hong Kong, with almost double the number of Singapore.
How is that relevant? They don’t buy enough homes to materially move the RE market. You act as if all 8M people in the Bay Area desire to be a founder of a startup and billionaire. 85% don’t even work in tech. Most of them just want a nice place to live and raise a family. A city with streets full of poop and used drug needles isn’t that place. How many people here even work at a company founded by a billionaire?

Is this an increase in operating costs for SF? I mean I can’t see the SF PD laying off police officers who would’ve otherwise spent some portion of their time on the aforementioned disputes. Which means more taxation to pay for the unarmed, trained professionals.
