Mexico’s a much smaller country than China, however, trade with Mexico is almost equal to trade with China. The impact should be much worse to Mexico.
Mexico and Canada are pretty much dependent on US for living. It’s hard for Mexico and Canada to fight against the gorilla Neighboor

We are living in a free fall into the cliff country here. This clown in the white house says one thing today, the stock market reacts depending on what he says. Then, next day he goes the opposite and creates havoc.
Meanwhile, his inside trading partners are making a killing. But his supporters? Playing Russian roulette with the stock market?
Where are they right now by the way? Selling their stocks?

Some people clearly value avoiding conflict above everything else even if that means:
- Decades of lower real income for the middle class
- The first time in American history the average person is worse off than their parents were at the same age
I guess they expect the middle class to be ok with consistently and slowly losing while people in other countries benefit from terrible trade agreements. It’s honestly long past time the US stood up for the citizens and did something about it. It’s obvious other countries aren’t going to just agree to fair trade without suffering some first. We’ve conditioned them for decades that we’ll accept unfavorable trade deals.
Anyone with a long-term investment horizon should gladly take some short-term volatility if it means better trade deals for the US which will lead to much higher long-term gains in their investments.
Not the other countries fault. It’s the entitlement attitude of the average Americans. What makes you think you deserve a better minimum wage than the other countries. Are you a smarter or a better worker than the Chinese?
Reality check! Trump trying to preserve your entitlement will ultimately end in failure.

That’s not what fair trade is about. Other countries impose tariffs on more goods from the US and at higher rates. That’s not fair trade. It’s biased trade that puts the US at a disadvantage. It’s long past time the US demands fair trade.
That I agree. We should eliminate all tariffs.

Do you think other countries will just remove tariffs if we ask? That seems to be what people don’t get. Countries aren’t going to just remove them if we ask. The short-term pain is necessary to get what’s best long-term.
Even if all trade tariffs are removed, it’s still not going to fix the trade imbalance. Let’s not cloud the reality here with this “fair trade” crap.
If America wants to fix the trade imbalance with China, Americans better get rid of their entitlement attitude and work for peanuts in a sweat shop like the Chinese do.

By this time, you should have, at least seeing the stock market at 30,000. 3% return for a year? I thought you guys were smart?

Removing all tariffs would be great. China isn’t going to remove the tariffs on its own though.
Trump wants more than fair trade, he uses tariff wantonly.
For example, if Mexico charges 20% on US imports, then charges similar for Mexican imports. But he uses tariffs to ask for stopping illegal immigrants.

In IT, we use APIs and won’t dictate how the APIs are implemented internally. Similarly, trading is about interfacing, so should only talk about trade terms and not bring in all kinds of stuffs including US domestic issues.

Exactly. America’s racial inequality or gender inequality should have nothing to do with the tariffs other countries charge.
It’s good to get the most benefit for US, but the means needs to be decent in order to avoid being viewed as a bully. US is the only superpower in the world, there’s better ways to achieve the same result.
Do you think China was concerned with fairness when they banned US financial firms? They don’t care about fairness or how it’s bad for the US. They are putting themselves first. Now the US is putting the US first. Negotiation isn’t about fairness. It’s about using the leverage you have to get what you want.
Illegal immigrants cost the US over $50B/yr. We just blindly paid the bill for decades. Now we’re finally doing something to punish the country that’s enabling it. Mexico could greatly reduce it by securing their southern border.
The goal isn’t to have equally high tariffs across the board. The goal is to have zero tariffs. Why would China give up a 25% tariff on cars when the US only has a 5% tariff? There’s literally no logical reason for them to give up the advantage unless the US takes action.
This is not a trade issue. My point is Trump wasn’t talking about trade, he is interfering with other nations’ affairs.
Are you implying previous Presidential administration didn’t do that?
China should put tariffs on American goods because America is selling fighter jets to Taiwan. It seems we can use tariffs on whatever trade unrelated stuff now. You have any grievances? Answer: tariffs.
