Market is still betting trump will turn around at the last minute and there won’t be any trade war. I am not so sure. This is the only thing Trump has been consistent. Well I guess his hatred for non whites counts as well.
Trade war is still a solid possibility. There aren’t even talks now between US and China.

Reduce trade deficit without impacting economy i guess :). I dont really think much will happen to the local economy jobs, market etc wise.

If restricting trade had zero bad effects on economy, that means the trade we now have doesn’t do us any good. Companies are fools to trade with China and have supply chain in China as it apparently doesn’t boost their profits.

Both sides can’t lose in war. One loses and one wins. Both can get hurt though but there is one clear winner. China will be the loser in this. They know it. Trump knows it.
Bigger question is what is trump trying to achieve from China. It’s not about balancing the trade for sure. Bringing NoKo to the negotiation table could be one objective. What else?

How do you define what “winning” means in a trade war? Zero trade deficit? Only goods trade or do you include services like Chinese students coming to US and spend money on rent and tuition?
Trump wants to suppress China’s rise. He’s putting US right into the Thuycididas trap.
China can play dirty, and it often does. Don’t just look at the official bilateral trade numbers. There are many more games China can play.
Xi only needs to worry about the grim reaper, Trump and the GOP have a lot more stakeholders to worry about.

Objective is not to win the trade war so traditional definition of winning a trade war won’t apply. Trade war is a means to achieve something else. I think bringing the little Kim to discussion table was one of them. Can’t be done without his master (China) allowing him.

Because not so long ago the minds of all Chinese people were blocked by a closed economic system. So they were smart but useless. These minds got unleashed into the wild ever since China opened up. The result has been a spectacular 40 years of hyper growth.

(1) Yes, Chinese couldn’t figure out capitalism on its own, but that’s not because they are dumb, and it will not affect them moving forward (look at Japan).
(2) Americans didn’t invent capitalism. They also borrowed it from elsewhere.
