Umbrella Insurance of $1M or Auto/Home Policy coverage of $1M

True, it is a hassle to call everyone. I maintain only AAA as my standard insurance provider and I always call them.

Why? it seems like it’d be way more expensive. Part of why umbrella is so cheap is it only kicks in when you exceed auto and home owners coverage limits. If they can’t enforce you having the right limits, then you’re going to pay for an umbrella that covers everything instead of just above $xxx, xxx.

So disappointed to read you guys. Really. You go for the familiar company advertising anywhere.

I have a friend, a broker. He told me to look at a cheap underwriter and I did. He gave us a quote saving us $1K a year including our cars and home insurance. We had AAA, they never, ever wanted me to get a discount even though I’ve been with them for 27 years.

I said to my wife, “da hell with them” and switched to another company.

Because I am looking to switch to Metromiles and they don’t offer umbrella coverage.

It’s probably not worth it if you want an umbrella.

Is Metromile really turning out to be cheaper for you? I compared them with other major players for similar annual miles and they weren’t competitive.

AFAIK, Geico offers the cheapest UI and Auto insurance.

Yes it’s ~$200 cheaper for me every 6 months when compared to Geico.

And you made sure you had Geico account for the lower annual miles in their quote? They make you sign a form for that but the premium decreases for lower miles.

Yes. I found a broker that offers standalone umbrella insurance this afternoon and the umbrella quote is $100 more expensive than Geico’s. I guess overall I could potentially save ~$300/year but now you got me thinking that maybe I should stay put because Metro wouldn’t save me much if I end up buying my second property later this year due to more driving…:frowning:

Where are you buying your 2nd?

Not all cases are alike.
They couldn’t even go 40% cheaper than the one we got. From $2.2K a year in auto insurance, we went to $1.2K. Bingo!

Come on, at least in the days of paper maps, how do you think they pay for that kind of service level? Yes, gasp, higher premium rates. Need I repost that story about Kaiser releasing that ninety year old when they really shouldn’t have???

Almost 20 years with AAA, for autos, home, Umbrella (recent), no issues. IMO, they are best and sticking to them forever. To me, they are hassle free, low cost solution and I am further going with them Earth Quake insurance too for few homes.

Not here in the Fab 7x7… in fact, one of my best friends (know him most of my life) is a corporate officer there and he pretty admitted so much a long time ago when their Fab 7x7 HQ(?) was still in the city. Again, follow the money… you can’t be providing free this and that (maps, etc) without presumably baking it into the premium right? I mean, I had another friend who had AAA and got into an accident (not sure whose fault or what) but AAA ended up paying him WAY MORE than the car was worth (it was stock) without question. Yeah, great service and all…but you pay for it.

All my accidents, it was easy to deal with AAA, fixed terms, and settlement. Yes, I account this easiness as a part of preference. I stick to them so long for this hassle free help.

I get it. i am just that type of consumer who wants the best of both worlds: lowest price and best service. The analogy again is the reference to food. Any restaurant can make you the greatest meal by charging you the highest price but, ah, can a restaurant give you a great meal for very little money?

AAA is a non-profit I think, so they are saving on paying profits back to shareholders.

I don’t know about that, but all I know is that when I got quotes from carriers in the city AAA was higher (for me) and presumably all the people that I know who lives in the Fab 7x7 since I am sure they checked around too. Who doesn’t? And yes, despite my love for fast cars my record is clean. The last big ticket was driving the Benz convertible back from the mechanic actually and frankly the car was so smooth I didn’t know I was going that fast (no other cars around to tell relative speed).

LOL…If I had known, or being offered the rate I was offered, and I was living the life I am living now, $27K saved would be a good chunk of money.

Insurance is something that is not “one size fits all”.

You pay for a service, one way or the other.
