YIMBY movement is gaining momentum

Infrastructure can and are being paid for with new taxes. That’s literally what Mello Roos are designed for. The congestion on 101/280/bridges are bad because people are forced to live far off from their jobs. Imagine if PA and Sunnyvale etc prices are halved and housing is plentiful, would people still commute an hour each way from East Bay?

If there is the same limit on square footage allowed, there is no incentive to build a duplex which usually sell for less per sf than sfhs.

I see this is a common blind spot. One type of housing may get more expensive, but housing units in general get more plentiful and more affordable.

Cry some crocodile tears for fans of this particular type of housing.

We can do another thought experiment. Imagine people in the 40s and 50s got hung up on farm living and passed zoning laws forbidding converting farms into SFH’s. Fans of farm living would have been very happy as the Valley would probably still be covered with farms today and farm pricing would be affordable to them. But there wouldn’t be Silicon Valley. Santa Clara County would still be just a bunch of apricot farms.

I don’t know many people who argue SV’s existence is a bad thing for the region or the country.

@manch would be disappointed, no increase in supply of affordable houses :relieved:

Are you comparing apples to apples?

One apple sells for $1, how much do I sell 1/4 of apple for? F… 1/4 apple is not a full apple.

What bloggers are worried as owners of that $3M house would drop in price. It is unlikely in the short term.

Unless you are telling me 1/4 apple is selling for more than a full apple, 1/4 apples are more affordable.

Some people love their SFH’s on 6k lots so much that they don’t mind if others are literally camping on streets.

.

What bloggers are worried as owners of that $3M house would drop in price. It is unlikely in the short term. Long term prices may drop as you have degraded the neighborhoods as opposed to your thought experiment that neighborhoods worth has become more desirable.

Wait a minute. I thought people are telling me housing won’t be more affordable, meaning price won’t fall right?

I repeat houses are not exactly fungible.

True. 1/4 house is not same as 1 house.

Disney princesses like to live in palaces. Should we have special zones for palaces?

How about farms? I used to pass by everyday corn fields in the middle of prime San Jose next to Cadence on Montague. I wonder if it’s still there. Maybe we should pass laws forbidding selling and converting of farms. After all, farms are not the same as SFH’s.

I thought conservatives love free markets. Zoning is literally governments telling you what you can and can’t do on your private property.

It’s not sfh owners fault. The homeless are people that nobody wants. Druggies, criminals insane. Can’t follow rules, they were thrown out by their relatives. Building more housing won’t help the homeless. Encouraging them to move to cheaper areas will. Fresno maybe… definitely Ohio Indiana Iowa Mississippi. Plenty of affordable places. There is no affordable housing in Coastal Ca.

Not all homeless people are crazies. People tend to see the crazy ones because they are the ones acting out and attract all the attention. I agree those people need some tough love.

But there are also many homeless people who hold steady blue collar jobs. They just can’t afford a place. I don’t know how we can “encourage” them to leave. We are not China. We can’t forcibly ship people out.

Give them $10k to move. It’s better than the $40k per year spent in SF per person. Give other cities money to take them. Homestead Cleveland and Detroit. Give the derelict houses to the homeless that actually want to improve them. I bet only 10% of homeless are capable of working. The rest need rehab asylum or incarceration.

there are no jobs there. many of the homeless are the waiters and service staff you interact with on the Peninsula

I moved to a less expensive area. So can they. There are jobs everywhere. 10 million jobs and only 5 million looking. The idea that the homeless deserve to live in the most expensive place in America is insane.

And no need to destroy middle-class neighbourhoods to make room for the homeless and dopies.
