CNBC reported earlier this week that the company is working on wireless earbuds with some health and fitness-tracking features, representing its first foray into the wearables space, and could introduce them as early as Wednesday.
A sneaky attack on Apple Watch and AirPods market?
We did the tour at Tracy yesterday. There were two time slots and we did the later one at 3:30. There were about 30 people in our group, quite a few older people plus a few kids. The tour was one hour long and my kids were excited to see how our Amazon packages came to be. The techie people on here may have already known a thing or two about Amazon’s processes, about their Kiva robots, but I didn’t know they have self-driving fork lifts.
You can’t take your own pictures inside the warehouse. But they have a mobile photobooth kind of a device inside and the staff can take a picture for you, and you key in your phone number and they will text you the picture.
It’s a highly polished PR exercise on Amazon’s part. The curator didn’t forget to pepper in messages like how Amazon was the first in the industry to pay everyone $15 minimum wage, how Amazon will pay for associates’ college bill etc. Overall you will come out of the tour more positive on Amazon. That’s why they are doing it, and it’s fairly effective.
It makes sense for businesses to advertise directly where people shop. The profit margins on ads are sky high. I do think companies will get more and more cautious about selling on amazon as amazon basics and other amazon brands get bigger. I think brands will try to directly manage their relationship with consumers.
SHOP is my largest position. Amazon’s retail growth has really slowed and the profitability is terrible. FBA has been growing faster, is bigger, and makes far more profit for Amazon. People are finally attacking FBA. Sellers will prefer it, since the non-Amazon companies won’t turn around and compete against them.
Why does Amazon keep encroaching on their customer’s business? Yes, they have all the data but it just seems wrong. How good is the margin of an AmazonBasic t-shirt compared to a 3P using FBA?
If I was seller, I would love to see a strong competitor to Amazon.
