Wait, didn’t you say the Huawei ban was stupid? You don’t care if China can potentially control and monitor critical infrastructure, but social media influence is across the line?

I mentioned I have changed my mind on two things. One is that we need to walk back on completely free movement of goods and capital. The second is we need to be a lot tougher on China.

Yes, I didn’t agree with huawei ban before because I haven’t seen any evidence on them spying. There is still no evidence. But now I agree the ban is necessary because my trust of the Chinese government has fallen sharply over the last two years. China under Xi is a completely different animal from the Deng model I knew and admired.

No word about WFH forever from BABA, or any Chinese tech firms I am aware of.

Good article on what makes people successful in their career. It’s from a speech of Zhang yiming, founder of Bytedance, parent company of Tiktok that’s out-innovating Facebook. In Chinese only though.

He used himself as an example. He didn’t just finish his own work but kept looking for places to pitch in. Didn’t stay in his narrow engineering domain either. Took part in product development, business strategy and even went to see clients with sales managers. That’s how he grew and became a billionaire.

Imagine how people phoning it in from Kansas can do that.

Sorry, we are not billionaire materials.

Alibaba’s Ant Group fires starting gun on dual listing in Hong Kong, Shanghai

Since people don’t look up on you, don’t list in their exchanges.

Jack Ma’s Ant Seeks $200 Billion Value in Landmark Dual IPO

Ant’s Chief Executive Officer Simon Hu has said that he wants people to think of Alipay as more than just a niche provider of financial services and the payments gateway for the world’s biggest e-commerce platform. Alipay now caters to a wide array of consumer needs from groceries to wealth management, and hotel booking to loan applications.

Jack Ma’s Ant Group Sets Sights on Record IPO

Ant Group, which is 33%-owned by Alibaba, will pursue a simultaneous dual-listing in Hong Kong and on the Shanghai stock exchange’s STAR board, the Hangzhou-based firm said.

Ant Could Be the Biggest IPO Ever, but It Will Bypass the U.S. Others Could Follow.

It is also in keeping with Beijing’s push to build up its domestic technology index—the Star board—in Shanghai and getting companies to stay local rather than list on the Nasdaq.

With above, China Chinese can buy BABA directly from Shanghai exchange. This should open up a large group of investors for BABA. Previously only the enterprising ones buying through NASDAQ, then HK exchange, now Shanghai. More gap ups.

Hong Kong stock exchange to get new tech index tracking Alibaba, Tencent and 28 other peers

The gauge, known as Hang Seng Tech Index, will include the largest 30 of 163 such entities which command a combined HK$12.21 trillion (US$1.58 trillion) or just under one-third of the market capitalisation. The index will debut on July 27, according to compiler Hang Seng Indexes Company.

Expect a gap up on Jul 27.

Gap up 2mrw  This gap up is related to Ant IPO.

Decoupling accelerating at breakneck speed.

How much longer will Apple be allowed to do business in China?

Forget about all the pontificating on WFH. That ain’t no inflection point. The real inflection point of 2020 is the abrupt deterioration of china’s relationship with everybody. That’s many years in the making though. But after the Uighurs genocide, tearing up international treaty on Hong Kong, lying on coronavirus, invading India, on and on, the world can’t take it anymore.

That’s the real inflection point of the century.

BTW the official account of a Chinese party newspaper is running a twitter poll on which US consulate to close in retaliation.

Not saying ordering the Houston consulate to close within 72 hours is a wise move. It’s a major provocation so Trump better have some damn good reasons.

??? USA is not everybody. Total number of countries = 195. How many side with USA? The real inflection point is Trump opens fire like a cowboy at everybody. You are allowing yourself as an ex-HKer to cloud your thinking.

Depends on the voters in coming election.

Below is what WS thinks,

Trump closed most of the Russian consulates and nobody cared. In fact the one in San Francisco was basically a spy operation directed towards Silicon Valley. Don’t think the Chinese aren’t doing the same?

@manch let his ex-HKer feeling cloud his judgement. Perhaps, he still has many relatives in HK and has yearned to return to HK and only stay in US reluctantly. Actually HK and Uighur issues are China’s domestic affairs, just like BLM is USA domestic affairs, nothing to do with other nations. Btw, many Uighurs are enjoying life in China, only certain separatists are targeted.

I am married to a Russian and even she doesn’t trust them. I don’t understand your blind loyalty to the Chinese communist government and Xi. They are as trustworthy as Putin and have a lot more power and money.

Countries that matter side with us.

Elitists? Some are better than others :scream: Do you have German blood?

Sound like you are saying “those that matters now” would matter less in the future because of China is helping “those being exploited currently”? Hence is the revolt of the elitists

@Elt1 All politicians are liars, don’t trust any. @manch is not foolish, he sides with his vested interest :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: not because of ideology nor right/wrong. You have made the wrong assumptions about what I am thinking.

Huge if true.

Prosecutors say S.F. consulate is harboring Chinese military researcher wanted by FBI

China (the CCP) , like rest of the left, had a good run from 1950/1960 on wards. They had fifty years to prove that the Chinese economic and political model is the best thing to happen to the world since the slice of the bread. The reality came out pretty soon and is there for everyone to see.

Which is pretty outstanding that Trump felt the need to give China a speeding ticket.

When China (through CCP ) begins claiming ownership on an island , a sea, and cities and territories of of other countries, it is not a minor moving violation.
