Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 Covid-19

Totally. That’s why my mom avoids them like the plague–noroviruses love to travel on cruise ships, and everyone is eating off of a buffet.

So no plans to actually test more people, just a promise that IF you get tested you won’t get billed for it. That and a disaster declaration that amounts to nothing more than a federal money grab.

State officials announced Thursday that more than 22 million Californians will be eligible for free coronavirus testing when medically necessary.

Sounds like the person in my story above is still out of luck.

That was my point. If it was highly contagious, everyone on the ship in Japan would have it. The ship is about the worst possible situation for a disease to spread easily.

There are no essential community events. They are all non-essential. Cancel them all.

Some modeling of how all this will turn out:

19/21 of the positive cases were ship staff. If any of them were out with the passengers, I imagine there are a number of people coming down with it right now. If they were all behind the scenes and not involved with food prep, then it would depend on what the two passengers were doing during the trip.

I think the US is still deciding whether we’re just slowing the spread or trying to stop it entirely. Maybe if we understood the goal, the decisions would make more sense. But I can’t even figure out what the goal is. For example if SF/BA wants to slow the spread, then cancel large events. If SF/BA wants to halt all spread, then it’s time for an immediate quarantine. Everyone’s had two weeks to stock up on essentials. Just do it.

I bet this estimate the will prove laughable. We already all died from SARS, swine flu, bird flu, Zika virus, and every other end of the world scare that happens every few years.

I have read a prediction of 40-60% infections in other places. Hopefully it will be less than that.

But I am very worried about the treatment here in the US. I think the numbers will be like those of Italy, if we are lucky. The population of Italy is 60M, 1/5 of the population of the USA.
Their number of infections has exploded. And 197 deaths as of now.

Germany more than doubled their number of infections in 24 hours. It went within 1 day from 260 to 545 infections, but nobody has died - yet.

I understand that containment works better the less freedom a society has. We - residents of the USA - pay now the price for living in a relatively free society.

I just realize that I have an appointment in the local hospital next week. Sigh. Probably the least healthy place to go.

the other issue with the US is that we have a population that is probably less healthy then average of the world (obesity, diabetes, etc). That will probably put us in a worse shape as the virus aggravates underlying conditions.

Cancel the appointment. Both of us are in the vulnerable category. Has to be careful.

The CDC guidance comes as two top infectious disease experts with ties to the federal government have advised people over 60 and those with underlying health problems to strongly consider avoiding activities that involve large crowds, such as traveling by airplane, going to movie theaters or concerts, attending family events, shopping at crowded malls, and going to religious services.

Cautiously optimistic that Phua from Singapore may be right that coronavirus are in general unstable and would burn itself out. Number of new cases is dropping in all nations indicating either Phua is right :+1: or we run out of test kits :scream: or slacking. I was expecting death rate in nations the further away from the Wuhan epicenter the lower it will get since virus tends to be weaker as they get transmitted. HK is the nearest to China and has a death rate of 1.85%, so any nations that have higher death rate has either bad healthcare infrastructure or have been too complacent/ lack of preparation.

Your “new” column is misleading. It resets at GMT +0.

I suspected that but couldn’t see any place that say it would be reset. Where is it indicated as such?

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 97 countries and territories around the world and 1 international conveyance (the Diamond Princess cruise ship harbored in Yokohama, Japan). The day is reset after midnight GMT+0. The “New” columns for China display the previous day changes (as China reports after the day is over). For all other countries, the “New” columns display the changes for the current day while still in progress.

Ok, the worldometers is more up to date site and clearer.

Outbreak.cc gives the impression that it is moving 24 hrs.

Some1 from the top think we are living too long? How come no fatalities for 0-9 yrs old?

I am not surprised Santa Clara county has the most, but surprised Alameda didn’t have more. Solano and Contra Costa is a head scratcher as well… maybe it’s the cruise ships.

One faculty member at Stanford tested positive and they are closing down the campus for 2 weeks. A FBI agent in SF also got it. This graphics doesn’t include those cases yet.

So far only 1500 tests in the US… things will get worse before it gets better.
