How does the Seattle shutdown work? Is school and workplace closed?
I think the number of Seattle cases might be underreported since many people won’t get tested if symptoms are not severe. The biggest risk is on these affected people who shows no serious symptoms.
and we are futzing around with proprietarily developed kits and not enough of them because the last 2 heads of CDC appointed by the admin have been respectively a grifter (got fired for self dealing) and a hard christianist currently
“Without harming the principle of a transparent and open society, we recommend a response system that blends voluntary public participation with creative applications of advanced technology,” South Korea’s Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip told journalists.
Details about the travel histories of confirmed patients are also available on municipal websites, sometimes with breakdowns of a patient’s residence or employer, which can make them identifiable individually, leading to concerns about privacy.
Truly transparent and open society where people are volunteered Will Americans accept this?
Covid-19 tests are prohibitively expensive in many countries but in South Korea, all tests are free.
How expensive in USA? South Korea and Singapore can afford to pay for all tests.
South Korea is also using its cutting-edge IT technology and its ubiquitous surveillance cameras to track infection sources, identifying the movements of confirmed cases based on their credit card transactions and mobile phone tracking, and disclosing this information to help trace those who may have come into contact with them.
Huh? Full blown surveillance of citizens? Will Americans accept this?
Some Asian governments already have expanded surveillance efforts. South Korea is using credit-card transactions to track patients’ travel routes, and it started using a GPS-based app to monitor people under self-quarantine. Singapore’s health authorities have tapped ride-sharing data and surveillance cameras to do the same. In Taiwan, health inspectors track mobile-phone signals to make sure people don’t ignore home-isolation orders.
Officials in China and elsewhere have promised that new surveillance measures put in place to fight Covid-19 are temporary.
Some of us would prefer to never be dependent on the government for anything. They have a long track record of mediocrity. They never fix a problem without creating a host of unintended consequences. The biggest thing in S Korea is the mindset of people to do the right thing for the whole. That’s nothing the government did. It’s individuals making decisions on their own.
Individuals can’t make their own virus test kits or mandate lockdowns. Governments have a role to play. If not the best standard of living would be found in places with no governments like deep in the amazon jungle or the Afghanistan mountains.
Korea is making great progress. This virus hit will soon be in their rear mirror. The US though is still struggling with basic testing and flying blind.
