State’s rights. It means the status quo - plus it gives other states latitude to push back on any federal laws coming down the pike that they don’t like e.g. gun laws.
In serious cases it cuts the death risk by 5 to 12%. Certainly no panacea.
But of course it’s all about optics. The announcement of a vaccine would drive markets and confidence through the roof even if it only turned out to be 10% effective.

An absolute mess of an article which puts none of the figures into perspective. With a population of 209 million and 44,000 deaths Brazil is about average. England, by contrast, with 56 million people and 30,000 deaths has done almost 4 times worse than Brazil.

The thing with exponential growth is that life comes at you fast. Check back in two weeks and see how many have died in Brazil.
If you talk about exponential growth, you need to tell more.
Exponential functions depend upon the base and the power.
If the base is 1 (or 0), not matter what power you raise it to, it the final value will always be 1 (or 0).
Similarly, if the base is a fraction, and the power is a whole, it will equal to less than one.
And if base is greater than one and the power is a fractional number, it will be smaller than 1.
Indeed. But with fewer measures in place the curve will peak faster. So trying to extrapolate beyond a couple weeks is likely useless.
Brazil’s ability to recover from the long term economic damage of a lockdown - and the inevitable though not headline generating deaths that causes - also needs to be considered.
The regions that did not shut down and those who did do not appear to be doing much different. This simply sounds similar to the comparison between regulated and unregulated economies. It will be a good idea to compare the numbers from blue states (that want to remain shut) and the red states (that are already open) a few weeks later. And also to be compared, the cost of shutting down the economy.
Meanwhile Zika and AIDS are rampant in Brazil. The news media has a short attention span and can only terrorize us so much.
Not to mention Dengue fever, Yellow fever, Rocky Mtn spotted fever and a host of other nasty tropical diseases.
