Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 Covid-19

I finally know someone who died of Covid. He was older and unvaccinated with a lot of comorbidities. HOWEVER, he was unvaccinated because he recently had a severe case of Guillain Barre’ syndrome which is a contraindication to getting a number of vaccines, and in this case very much justified him not doing so. He did get his wife (who has dementia) vaccinated…

Sometimes there’s a lot more to the story for some of the people who are unvaccinated…

The only thing I can fault him for is not having someone check in on him every day and possibly for not calling 911 if he started feeling bad (maybe he died in his sleep? I don’t know). No one knows how long he was dead for before the police broke down the door, and no one knows how long the wife went without eating… (could’ve been up to 13 days)

A good summary of the Omicron development. There’s still a lot we don’t know but we are starting to know more and more.

Totally unrelated to air travel - has anyone researched air purifiers to find out which ones were tested and actually killed or removed viruses from the air? We’re starting to have people over again (indoors), and I’m thinking I should pick some up just as an extra precaution. Looking for quiet & effective units under or around $100 if such a thing exists.

Data continues to support the hypothesis that Omicron results in less severe infections compared to previous waves.

Break out the Champagne!

However, if Omicron proves to be much more infectious, then

(Number of infected) x (Share of patients with severe symptoms) = Total number with severe symptoms

could still be high because of the much higher first factor.

That’s kind of bizarre. 25% of Delta patients needed ICU care? Am I reading that right?

Omicron is the good variant that get rid of all the other more lethal variants, go figure

WSJ: Pfizer Says Booster Neutralized Omicron but Variant May Elude Two Doses

Pfizer Inc. PFE -0.61%▲ and BioNTech SE BNTX -3.10%▲ said that a third dose of their Covid-19 vaccine neutralized the Omicron variant in lab tests but that the two-dose regimen was significantly less effective at blocking the virus.

A third dose increased antibodies 25-fold compared with two doses against the Omicron variant, the companies said. Still, two doses may prove effective in preventing severe illness from Covid-19, they said, because immune cells are able to recognize 80% of parts of the spike protein that the vaccine targets.

Just got my booster. Trump voters are older so they will more likely to die. But even Trump was vaccinated. I don’t understand anti vaxers. When I was a kid everyone got vaccinated. I remember Kamala Harris saying she wouldn’t take the Trump vaccine. When did vaccines become political?

“The trend was robust, even when controlling for age, which is the primary demographic risk of COVID-19 mortality. The data also reveal a major contributing factor to the death rate difference: The higher the vote share for Trump, the lower the vaccination rate.”

Trump counties are rural. The first wave missed them so they don’t enjoy the same herd immunity as other areas.

No way. Even if you’re reading it right, that can’t possibly be right.

3 shots about 75% effective against Omicron.

Reinfections much higher with Omicron compared to Delta. Even if you had Covid before, still best to vaccinate.

Just look at infection rates skyrocketing in pro sports. The entire NHL except 1 player is vaccinated. Yet, there are teams reporting multiple cases.

The NJ nets have a 100% vaccination rate, since it’s required to play games in NYC. They have 7 players out.

Either they’re hitting the point the vaccine is no longer effective, or it’s not very effective against new variants. Athletes are the real use case for effectiveness, since they are tested regularly regardless of symptoms. They show how many people likely have covid but are asymptomatic.

They do breathe more heavily though while in close contact with other people.
