Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 Covid-19

where you get the numbers?
CA sucks

“Keeping humans apart from other humans is the only tool we currently have to slow this virus’ spread”

Dioworld would have some words for him… Words like “Make everyone wear a facemask!”

need more than 1 weapon against this. mask/social distance/wfh/tracking isloation(i think at this point is impossible now)…

Problem with only self-quarantine for anyone with symptoms is: many people who carry the virus may not have symptoms, and can infect vulnerable population when they go about their lives. In fact, some research shows this could be driving the community transmission in this country.

Testing far more people will be effective only if we follow up with contact tracing, like what South Korea and other Asia countries are doing. For 8% of tests that are positive, isolate the patient, test people who have recent close contact with the patient, then isolate any positive cases from that. If we keep doing this, we will not end up with ten of thousands of positive cases right now.

Speaking of masks, dioworld, here’s to you. I went shopping today and decided to do what you ask and wear a mask. Really a bandana…The cashier at one of the grocery stores who was wearing a mask told me he felt like everyone was glaring at him when he was out on the streets and avoiding him with the mask on (but hey, everyone should be avoiding each other anyways). Anyways, felt good to be able to show him some solidarity. Because quite frankly he’s being exposed to everyone who goes shopping. And I’m also glad he wasn’t breathing on my groceries.

I think though I should make a real mask. I worry that the bandit look is going to give some of these people PTSD… The Trader Joe’s had been robbed at gunpoint in the last year…

This (may or may not be ) humorous (from my husband):

With shelter in place, testing should really be happening for grocery store and hospital staff

US total: 43,630/288,458 = 15% positive

CA: 1,733/ (1,733 + 12,567) = 12% positive

NY: 21,689 / (21,689 + 57,414) = 27% positive

NJ: 2,844 / (2,844 + 359) = 89% positive !!! :scream:

CA positive rate is below national average. Of course we should all test more, especially NJ! It’s nuts they have done so few.

I agree with testing for grocery store staff. My grocer sneezed a few times and didn’t look too well. Scared me quite a bit.

My word to Ja Rule. Take it easy. They would have still died in a matter of few years with or without corona.

Get a hijab and nobody will dare to glare at you.

My question. Why are vulnerable people not self-quarantining and why are they roaming around and mixing up with the general population? Should vulnerable people blame others for the choices they (the vulnerable people ) are making?

When I say vulnerable population, I include

  1. people that are 50 or older, where mortality rate is higher than 1%,
  2. younger people with underlying health conditions, and
  3. younger people who need hospitalization after getting infected.

These groups will add up to a large percentage of total population, and they can not all self-quarantine without shutting down the economy.

Some research shows 10-20% of all infected need hospitalization. When infected population is large, hospitalization demand will overwhelm health care system.

Single? Couple? You want to volunteer to take care of them for free?

Look at the WH! Why are they roaming around?

Great question. One of my friends was pointing out the craziness of having Senior shopping hour when the people working the grocery store are being exposed to everyone. Do the grocery stores wipe down all doors, all handles, all carts?

It would be much better if those at risk self-isolated and people brought them food. Best yet, you send the store a copy of your shopping list, and only the store staff, with gloves and mask on, pack it up. Some places are offering this, but not the major supermarkets.

And sometimes I wonder if theyunderstand. I was in Trader JOe’s today and theis 60-70 year old guy wasn’t wearing a mask, and wasn’t keeping 6 feet away from me. I felt like “DUde! Don’t you understand we’ve got a rogue virus out there and it’s looking for YOU?”

There are a lot of people who would gladly do this for their neighbors.

In your neighborhoods? Many neighborhoods in SV are full of elderly.

Do you realize most of the top leadership in companies belong to the vulnerable group? Time for them to retire? Compulsory retirement age at 60 with no exception?

Yes. I’m sure there are people who would help in all neighborhoods, and right now a bunch of SAHMs who would rather volunteer an hour or two of time to deliver food than what they’re currently doing which is homeschooling aka “online schooling” their kids.

Plus there are many services already setup to deliver food and goods. The infrastructure was absolutely in place to serve that community, they just are the last community to use it because they’re less tech savvy. But that infrastructure is now going to be damaged because of layoffs and a recession.
