Ditch SF buy Austin

Not enough.

NC. Omitted few words, “to compensate for the drop in prices of CU property.”

Yet another article to tickle @manch,

Survey: Austin is nation’s most desirable city for IT professionals

“Austin has a lot to offer IT pros, both from a cultural and lifestyle perspective as well as in terms of income potential and cost of living, which is slightly lower than the U.S. average,” Amy Carrado, CompTIA senior director of research and market intelligence, said in an email. “Not only are jobs in tech plentiful right now, job growth over the next five years is expected to rival the (San Francisco) Bay Area. It’s no wonder Austin has become a big draw for tech workers and tech companies.”

Looks like Apple is leaving Austin and going back to China.

So far, Tim Apple’s passionate wish to bring back manufacturing jobs to USA failed miserably. First is GTAT and now manufacturing of MacPro which is supposed to be almost fully automated.

Tim Apple is just not patriotic enough. Should burn shareholder money to subsidize American jobs. :us:

What’s bad about Austin? Why are people against moving and living in Austin? What’s Austin’s real and the worst disadvantage?

Totally bad for spoilt ex-Hong Kongers. No good Cantonese restaurants and joints. Too hot and humid for folks who have only experienced temperate climate. Of course the usual excuses of living away from extended families and friends, as if this is the first time.

Real advantages: about the same pay, similar house at 1/8 the price (make double property tax rate moot), no state income tax, relatively less jams, flat to hill country terrain, The Domain, master planned community, cheap energy, modest to huge mansions with lake front views at affordable prices, no earthquakes, lower mortgage rates,…

No good Chinese restaurants, not just Cantonese.

I heard that traffic is already a mess in Austin. It seems during commute time it takes 1 hour to get to Domain from Leander where the homes are already 350k with 10k property tax. Also there is pay cut and RSU cut moving to Austin from SV. Ask any employees who moved there recently. The biggest complaint other than weather is that the place is boring. With temperatures hovering around 85 at 9 PM not sure how attractive it’s going to be.

Relatively less jammed  Many alternative routes e.g. use the toll highway.

Why stay so far? Many cheaper, albeit older, houses in 78727, 78758 and 78759 costing $270k-$350k. Or rent from landlords like me :joy: I don’t own any houses that far. Cedar Park is as far as I get to.

They bought houses costing $400k-$600k in Avery Ranch-Brushy Creek. There are many smaller and older houses costing as low as $210k.

SV is not boring? The Domain is hot at night. Ask the locals, you would discover many hot joints.

Seriously? One hour drive to beach and surfing, perfect weather for biking, running, other sports, excellent hiking trails, night life. Access to one of the most visited cities in the world.

Austin can never get the cream of engineers. It’s forever doomed to be a second class tech hub. I am not being resentful at all. I am being very objective here. So please don’t hate me.

The cream of engineers are paid extremely well here in Bay Area and opportunities here are easily the best in the world, especially if they are ambitious enough to start their own shops. They don’t need to settle for 3rd best.

How many engineers surf, bike, or do anything remotely athletic?

I hate the filthy SF :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I don’t go to beach and surfing - of no value to me. Don’t do those other stuffs too. I love night life where bad things happened. Night life, you don’t know Austin :grinning:

I don’t have a :crystal_ball: Not long ago, SV is an orchard :stuck_out_tongue:

Why can’t both Austin and SV be good places to work and live? Everything is a dam competition…

@manch has prejudices and once believed in a certain idea, fossilized and can’t be changed.

Just to be sure. What I posted above is not just my personal opinion. I have researched Austin very carefully -including a 5-day visit. There are quite a few people that have moved to the bay area from Austin in the last year. They won’t go back ever.

You should be able to find counter examples easily :grinning: That is went to Austin from SV and won’t go back. We don’t have :crystal_ball:, is judgement call about the future. All we knew is the past and present, may be sure about what would happened in the next few years.

Overwhelming number of people think Apple is a gone case in 1997. They think Apple is not able to compete with Microsoft in the PC arena and they are right!

I am aware of popular opinion but future is unpredictable, quite often turn out to be vastly different.

Because people can leave middle school but middle school never leaves them.
