Wow, The Man who is credited for transforming San Francisco into the Tech Town that it is today, is dead at age 65. Initially, praised highly for all of the positives and then blamed for all the positives. RIP, Mayor Lee.
Mayor Ed Lee, the city’s first Asian American mayor and the man who presided over San Francisco’s rise to the top of the tech world, died early Tuesday morning after suffering a heart attack. He was 65.
Lee collapsed while shopping at the Safeway grocery store on Monterey Boulevard near his Glen Park home at about 10:30 p.m. Monday and was taken by ambulance to San Francisco General Hospital. He died at 1:11 a.m., surrounded by his friends and family.
The mayor’s office released a brief statement early Tuesday morning confirming Lee’s death, stating in part: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family.”
He was all pro-immigrants of any sort.
Not like some traitors I know always criticizing and berating other immigrants by race or nationality.
Really??? He just died and you had to say something disrespectful. This is not the time to diss somebody who just died. At least for being the first Chinese American mayor he should deserve a praise rather than a condemnation from all Chinese Americans when he died from a tragic death.
Overall, I think Mayor Lee will be viewed as probably one of the better mayors we have had in SF, and I am not saying that because he is a Chinese American whose upbringing is similar to mine. He helped raise SF from the Great Recession rather quickly and has made SF what it is today. Let’s not mince words: ANY city in the world would love to have the “problems” we have. We were always fairly diverse in terms of industries (financial services, hotel and travel, etc) but now we are into tech in a big way. That is huge. Just look at who is here now. Salesforce, in a big, big way, with the tallest building around. Facebook has leased tons of sq footage. And with that prosperity comes a lot of money that then is used for the citizens of the city. We are able to spend a lot to help the homeless because well we are making money. No money, no services. The other side of the coin of course is the gentrification and affordability concerns that people will lay blame onto Mayor Lee, but that is really not fair. It is not so easy to be able to turn on the water and simply stop it when you “think” you have enough. Being Mayor is a thankless job. You will be blamed either way, too much success which drives out the poor or too little success which draws complaints that you are not doing enough. Well, I would rather be flush than not. Mayor Lee worked very hard to promote SF and as a SF native and homeowner, I could not be more thankful to him for what he has done for me personally. RIP, Sir.
It would be very hypocritical of me to say I love his policies just because he died. That is not out of respect, that is sympathy. I am in no way disrespecting him and I wish him rest in peace. His policies and his death are two separate issues, please don’t mix the two.
Then choose another time to talk about it! You said nothing about the guy all year long and only stated something negative about him upon his death without giving any additional explanation. It shows less sympathy in addition to disrespect.
Ed Lee did great things for San Francisco. Really shocked that he passed away at this age.
He is a moderate, but is a little too soft on the bad apples such as Jane Kim. He could block some of Kim’s stupidities. Hope Kim will move out of SF quietly and speedily so that SF can regain its common sense.
How is San Francisco General hospital? I hope he got the best medical treatment.
My understanding is that SF General ER is like top notch. It probably was just too late to save him. Jane, unfortunately, is not going away anytime soon. In fact, I could see her maybe strategizing on how to become Madam Mayor. Scary…
No, supervisors are elected but can term out (thank god). Although I have always said if someone is actually good why make them leave? Maybe we allow the constituents/voters to have a say in it…
The influx of more moneyed folks will moderate the politics over time. Another factor is more participation from the sunset Chinese. They are way more conservative than the SF population at large.
