Shares of Amazon, Google and Facebook were down Monday after reports that U.S. antitrust regulators have a new oversight agreement.

Trump is just a more erratic Bernie. Protectionist on trade and hell bent on destroying the most innovative bits of the US economy. Farming and coal mining? Oh those he loves.

The phrase starving artist exists for a reason. Idiots.

Do you think there’d have been more or less innovation without the antitrust case against Microsoft?

What’s happening stifles innovation by creating an unfair barrier to entry for new companies. It’s referred to as rent seeking behavior where dominant industry players seek ways to limit competition. Less competition means they can easily maintain the cash cow without new innovation. It’s bad for consumers and anti capitalism. There’s no way consumers benefit from Google using their dominant search engine market share to give priority ranking to other google products.

Antitrust is a big hammer. Any administration ought to be extremely careful in wielding that hammer. In the case of Microsoft I think it’s a bad use of antitrust. Microsoft is dominant because it has been doing everything right. It was actually a very innovative company when Gates was running it.

What was the crime of Microsoft? To include a browser in Windows. Do you find any OS in the world today that doesn’t include a browser? MacOS has a browser. iOS has a browser. Android has a browser. It’s standard business practice that certainly makes users’ lives easier.

Here’s Charlie Munger arguing against Microsoft antitrust in year 2000:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/opinions/2000/09/01/a-perverse-use-of-antitrust-law/c9f59194-fd2e-48bc-9c2e-8ddfbf4089a0/?utm_term=.691712f494c8

Anti-trust inherently means rules applying only to the dominant players and not to anyone else. That’s government picking winners and losers. Instead we should invest in more regulations that apply to all tech companies. Things like better privacy protections, data portability, open API etc. Antitrust cases tend to be long, expensive and all-consuming. You are taking on the biggest companies in the world with lots of competent lawyers. I’d rather have that energy spent on more fruitful areas.

If you think the case was about the OS having a web browser, then there’s no point in discussing this.

What was it about then?

United States v. Microsoft Corporation , 253 F.3d 34 (D.C. Cir. 2001),[1] was a noted American antitrust law case in which the U.S. government accused Microsoft of illegally maintaining its monopoly position in the PC market primarily through the legal and technical restrictions it put on the abilities of PC manufacturers (OEMs) and users to uninstall Internet Explorer and use other programs such as Netscape and Java. At trial, the district court ruled that Microsoft’s actions constituted unlawful monopolization under Section 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit affirmed most of the district court’s judgments.

United States v. Microsoft Corp. - Wikipedia.

If that’s your conclusion from reading that, then I stand by my statement that there’s no point in discussing it.

Good buying opportunities to get some big tech?

Has Trump agree to the new deal? Until then stay in cash. We are in a bear market.

@Jil looks like a genius now. Except for the bad bet on Tesla.

I don’t think FB will drop below your selling price of $140 to let you get back in at a lower price point though.

Tesla will drop to $140 then.

Trump is more evil than I could’ve ever imagined. He is anti-innovation and trying everything he can to hold America back. He is only a friend to the coal-mining hillbillies who pollute the hell out of the environment. He really needs to go.

Trump also destroyed the long term potential of US semis firms. China now will develop its home grown capability. It will take them a while but they will get there.

Put your money where your mouth is

IMHO, the worst issue is US reputation is no longer worth much. Any POTUS can renege previous POTUS’s agreement/ promise.
