Lol. Wow, California is really leading here. Thatâll be a great example. Making something less of a crime increased how often it happens. Now they want to reduce the penalty, and they think thatâll lead to less crime. By that logic, they should just get rid of prison time for murder. Itâd reduce murder.
The problem with direct democracy is that there is no accountability. When legislators pass bad bills they get voted out. Bad propositions have to be litigated forever or voted down by a future one. We have a horrible one in South Lake Tahoe. Prop T won by 53 votes in a city of 25,000. Bans vacation rentals. Has torn the city apart. In litigation that will cost millions. Especially unfair because most of the owners that will be financially damaged donât have the right to vote, live somewhere else. The city will loose ten percent of it revenue. Owners will loose millions. Workers will loose hundreds of jobs. All because a vocal group of 500 or so took over council meetings and demanded that their rights are more important than the general welfare of the city.
I love how they define success as less people in prison. Why isnât success lower crime rates? They donât seem to want to talk about the effectiveness of the programs and if they lower crime rates.
Makes no sense. Great we saved some money but crime is rampant. How many broken car windows, how many burglaries in a day now in SF, Oakland, etc? Many are not even reported because itâs a waste of time.
Make tons of sense to politicians. AFAIK, definition of recession has been juggled till there is hardly any recession by definition. Ditto for general inflation rate. Remove all the culprits that show volatile or trending too violently. Inflation is mild and low
That money is now paid by the general public in terms of repairs and replacing stolen goods.
My Tesla Model 3 glass was broken into in San Jose 1st street @ a month back. A big chunk of change to repair it. That same evening 3 cars were broken into in the same parking area. Some people who came to talk said same thing happened to them last week in the same place. Next this crime is going to move into our homes.
Itâs just an online petition. There are field boxes to enter your info on the bottom of the page if youâre using mobile or the right hand side if youâre on a computer.
Does anyone find these numbers lower than what you had expected?
âDisparities in cash bail requirements in San Francisco have resulted in African American defendants paying an average of $120 per year for pretrial release compared to $10 for white defendants, according to the district attorneyâs office. Officials said this kind of inequality has led to a transfer of wealth in communities of color to private industry.â
If we are talking about numbers like $120/yr as cash bail, then I actually agree that itâs no biggie. True criminals should be able to post these amounts easily.
But the problem is, as some of the comments mentioned, as soon as you deviate from a hard rule and change to a more âopinion-basedâ system, you will be exposing yourself to future challenges about the fairness of the system. This is why he will probably never reveal his criteria of how they assess risk of each defendant, but I am sure some activists will still find some holes to attack.
That seems crazy low. I think to evaluate disparities youâd have to control for crime charged, prior criminal record to normalize it, employment, material status, and all the other factors used to set bail. I honestly donât see why it canât just be a table with maybe 10 factors and each one adds a percent to the base bail amount. Iâm sure thatâs be racist like credit scores.
