From what I understand masks that most people will buy have a limited usefulness. If they get wet, the virus can transmit into the mask. That’s why you don’t want to touch them. That said, if you’re coughing up a storm, it’s going to at least contain your cough into the mask, not 8 feet forward on the floor, and if someone coughs at you, maybe the mask will stop it, but you don’t want to keep wearing it.

Correct. You need masks that can block the biological material. The way the masks (and it’s only a subset of them that can) do it is by having an electrostatic layer. Once you get the mask wet, the layer is lost and it’s unable to block.
