OT: Jerusalem Issue

Ok, probably opening a can of worms here, but I admit my knowledge of Middle East history is very, very limited, but what is the big deal here? My understanding is that there was a war(s) once and Israel won. Hey, spoils to the winners. Why shouldn’t/can’t Israel lay claim to Jerusalem as its capital then? Why are all those countries against us? What am I missing, or not?

That portion of the world has been at war for centuries. I don’t see that ever changing.

Europe was at war for centuries

True. Religion makes the middle east conflict different though. Europeans weren’t fighting over holy land. Unless people in the middle east become agnostic, it’s not going to change.

Possible. But I wouldn’t discount peace just based on time spent on wars in the past.

But why is it different? Aren’t most if not all conflicts over ideology or religion of some shape or form? Does it even matter what the basis the conflict is over?

I’m not sure people in a country with freedom of religion can understand it.

That is a cop out answer IMO… To me, at the end of the day, it could be a fight over a Reese’s peanut butter cup but a winner to me is a winner. Loser has no say. Isn’t that how it always has been?

Not if the loser maintains that the fight isn’t over and keeps fighting.

Not to be mean or anything, but frankly I am sure there were people(s) who were completely wiped out in conflicts before and were never heard from again. War is hell, what can I say. You should be counting your stars that you are alive.

Interestingly most of the NATO member countries voted in favour.

What does that vote even mean? They are telling us they don’t approve. Wow, the UN really is pretty useless. Their power amounts to telling us that they don’t like it.

Which is why I am somewhat bewildered/confused on the subject. I mean, let’s get down to brass tacks. EVERY country came to be because well someone was stronger and took it from the inhabitants. I am not that naive to think the pilgrims came here and the native indians just said, sure, take this vast land for yourselves. The Palestinians could have been erased from the earth back then completely…

Except the Palestinians don’t want to give up fighting. And given the living condition they now have who can blame them?

Moving embassy to Jerusalem is an unnecessary provocation. Really what does it accomplish? You just tell the world go F yourself we will just do what we like. Jerusalem issue is one of the knottiest and we made it twice as hard.

Not to be mean, but Israel should have finished the job back then… end of story. The biggest gun wins. Reality. Darwin.

Finished the job by killing all Palestinians?

Yes! Do you mean to tell me in conflicts going way back that such a thing didn’t happen to some people? Israel has every right to lay claim to Jerusalem, they won. Simple as that.

@sfdragonboy Dood… come on man… edit your last few post/s…

Well it’s not just the Palestinians I am afraid. You may need to kill all the Arabs as well. Not sure either they or we had the stomach to do that. For sure we can’t say we are the leader of the free world and then go wipe out an entire population.

I agree especially with the “unnecessary” part. The Trump declaration doesn’t gain us anything.

The existence of the UN is to discourage exactly what you described. It cannot be avoided completely but people are trying really hard on that.
