Because AI is just getting started, and the absolute number is still pretty small.
Meanwhile tech outside of AI is also still laying off people. And that is a much larger share.
But AI is growing like a weed, and we are close to the bottom of tech layoff. Unless you are betting on tech keep laying off people in the foreseeable future. Another factor is we are seeing a muscular pushback on WFH.
What I am saying is that the 2nd derivative is now positive, while 1st derivative may still be negative. Itâs really not that hard to see a future where SF bounces back.
I now see tons of self driving Waymo and Cruise cars at night in SF. The number is really startlingly many. I feel like there are more self driving taxis than Teslas on the road in SF at night. I sometimes pulled up to check whether the driver side is empty. And they are.
I touched on the same points but Conor put them in a neat little package. SF downtown is really lopsided in its development. All offices and no housing. So when WFH hits this skewed ecosystem collapsed.
But outside of downtown SF is actually doing quite well. I have been eating out in different areas every night for the last two weeks. Itâs a really cool experience. Sort of a mini vacation inside the city.
Most people are not capable of understanding nuance. They just want things in black and white.
SF clearly has problems, but itâd be foolish to count it out. From the ground level here I can sense the political wind has already shifted, thanks to all the media attention SF has gotten. By the way itâs weird for East Bay people to feel smug given that they are now getting the Chesa 2.0 DA treatment.
The crime problem is actually the easy bit. All we need is voters demanding solutions and throw out the far left Supervisors next year. It can literally change overnight. The harder problem is how to re-configure downtown. But if tech bounced back with the help of AI we may not even need to change downtown all that much. All those office towers may get filled again.
âMayâ is the keyword here. My personal feeling is that downtown needs to change. Even before all these crime news stories I as a local never had a reason to go there.
The absolute hardest part is housing. SF and CA in general need to build tons of housing. And even there the YIMBY movement is fast gaining momentum. I am surprised at the progress is has made so far. It seems like itâs now pretty much the consensus among younger people.
Speaking of San Francisco in rough times, Warrior is back for Season 3!!! OMG, we have waited so many years for this!!! People, if you like great story lines and adult entertainment (nudity, kung fu action, and graphic violence) a la Crazy Rich Asians with the mostly Asian cast you have to watch this. On the Max channel, which was prev HBO Max. Free with DirectTV.
Oh, you are not going to believe it, but the Old Dragonboy has finally seen the light and that dish is no longer his defacto, must have, at any cost, food item. I have now a new food item that has taken the top position easily. It is like Denver over Miami, not even close.
As proof of how great the food is, my fellow poker buddy who lives back in SF is willing to drive down here for it regularly. Yeah, I am not far away, but the food is good.
I will miss it when I move back to the Sunset. Really.
