Check the wage growth in China. I heard the Chinese are eating more and more meat.
Tech being deflationary doesn’t mean price of meat will fall. It’s one of many factors. Without the productivity gain from tech prices will shoot up to the moon.
By the way current beef price is about the same as 2014, 7 years later.
BS. Without tech industry, pork may be even cheaper because no tech guys like you willing to pay high prices and many farmers than now. Most likely many family rear pigs.
For example, if not for tech industry, most of the stuff in BA will be much cheaper.
Told you I am not affected and in fact everything to me is deflationary. You have short memory?
I am saying tech is deflationary needs to be qualified. Only for tech and many manufactured products only. Don’t imply because of tech everything become cheaper, not true.
I just listened to a podcast on Chinese industrial policy. It now has three main focuses: semiconductors, aviation, and life sciences. Why life sciences? US has a monopoly on high tech seeds and without access to those seeds Chinese farmers can’t grow anything.
I will give @mach credit for his argument. Food production has been deflationary since the humans learned how to grow food and stopped being nomads and hunters. Even in last 70 years food production has grown manifold, and only 1% of population can grow food for the rest. Actually, food is wasted a lot more these days that it was even in past.
But, what seems to me @mach trying to do is to assure himself that MMT money printing will not lead to inflation or any bad effects that are pointed out in its opposition. That said, technology is deflationary for sure. But what he seems to miss is that technology also leads to obsolescence . And the excessive printing of dollars can result in not only currency (American Dollars in this case) loosing its function. but also becoming a thing of past. (just like Sony Walkman)
@manch and you are not able to explain and only quote one stage of the entire process. A few subprocesses may be deflationary but the entire process is inflationary is why we prices of basic necessities keep going up. Please don’t go too far into human history, we don’t have formal way to measure inflation. I essentially only look at my life time as time frame ie 70 years time frame.
Food is becoming expensive because of inflation created by excessive money printing even though technology is trying to reduce the price of food. For example, McDonalds may have saved by switching to ordering at kiosk or online, but still McChicken is twice as expensive as it was in 2010. So, productivity gains made some part of the value chain cheaper, but out of control money printing prevailed and made the end product twice as much expensive.
How come electronic products didn’t experience the inflationary effect of printing money? iPhone is getting cheaper through time after accounting for the increased sophistication.
So long tech is not deflationary enough to effect prices of basic necessities is not deflationary in my eyes. As I said, is whole process. Many things interact, the overall effect is inflation for basic necessities. That is I am not interested in analyzing the whole process which is too complicated, just treat it as a black box. Deflationary effect of Tech and automation is not able to make prices of basic necessities decline
The final price is result of net effect of inflationary money printing and deflationary productivity gains. And then there is the third element. They remove the product from the market after a few years. So, we do not see the product any more (obsolescence). The final price is net result of all the three. In case of electronic products, the effect of deflation is strong, but not so in the case of manual labor.
Btw, Biden led by Bernie/AOC wing is just beginning.
In an op-ed for The Washington Post in February, he warned that risk of inflation associated with the proposal could have “consequences for the dollar and financial stability.”
Who needs money when have pot and crypto .
I heard Musk is going to finance his Mars Invasion scam with Dogecoin. Double whammy a scam used to finance another scam
I wonder if the PC crowd is worried about offending Martians when we invade. Will Musk be new Christopher Colombus
