Singapore needs to be careful about the Chinese immigrants from China and Malaysia. My impression of Malaysian Chinese is that many are sympathetic to China because they got discriminated pretty badly in their home country. So many yearn for a strong motherland in China. With people from China most are indoctrinated in the official Chinese thoughts because that’s the only thing CCP allows inside China. Another issue with immigrants from China is that they bring money, and money brings influence.
LKY made a mistake in encouraging Chinese language in Singapore. Should have stuck with just English. We will see how Singapore will do in its 70-year test.
Singapore is trying to limit the number of immigrants by not appearing to be discriminatory… raise ABSD for foreigners to 50%… yet many still coming to snap up property in Singapore. Not sure you’ve been following the political scene in Singapore, there are already occasional cultural crashes between Singaporeans and those newly immigrants. Also have tightened criteria for immigrants.
Problem is after raising the investment requirement the immigrants will skew even more Chinese. Who will pay 5M to move to SG? Only people currently in shithole countries.
That WP article mentions past and current Singapore government officials warning about the mixed identities of people. They need to be Singaporean first and foremost and Chinese distant second.

In Singapore, a constitutional amendment made in 2016 allows for a presidential election to be reserved for an ethnic community if no one from that community had been president for the previous five presidential terms. This is called a “hiatus-triggered model”. The amendment also states that there will be at least one Chinese, one Malay, and one president who is either Indian or “other minority” within the course of six presidential terms, provided qualified candidates appear.
