So I did have a chance to drive the cousin’s Tesla.
The interior is meant to be spartan in a modernist way but looks horribly cheap for a 50k car. Cheesy-looking vinyl. Like an early 60’s Rambler. Exterior is uninspired as well. There are numerous little idiosyncrasies one has to get used to. The car slows rapidly when you take your foot off of the accelerator. You don’t need to apply brakes at low speeds when approaching stops - just release the accelerator pedal. You’ll likely stop before you expect to. No “creep” like an automatic transmission but there is a setting for that if you really miss it. The car doesn’t want you to hug the shoulder as I am wont to do (curvy roads and oldsters driving SUV’s or campers). If you are too close to the curb the car will fight with you to move back on center. If you want to pull off you also have to fight with it a bit. It sees the edge of the lane and doesn’t want you there - you have to insist. The acceleration is truly amazing and everything it’s cracked up to be. As for the autopilot - it does want you right on center, not over to the side in case someone invades your lane a bit, and the cornering feels abrupt. But it’s all perception. It doesn’t do stop signs or lights (yet) but on the highway you really could set it on autopilot and go to sleep for an hour or two and if you’re tired enough to do that you’re more likely to crash the car than it is to crash itself. You can even tell it whether to follow the cars in front of you or pass them if they are going slower than the speed you have set. Navigation control is by voice command - you tell it where you want to go. Nifty technology but it really is just an expensive techo-toy for short jaunts.
Darn, I thought you would’ve enjoyed it more. But it’s ok though, that’s why there are plenty of options out there for everyone!

Musk needs to make SUVs and pickups. A fully loaded diesel pickup in $80k

Small SUV/crossover coming next year.
Pickup will take some time in my opinion.

Pretty sure his loaded pickup won’t be cheaper

Even if $10k more it would be competitive with the fuel savings

Here’s a podcast of Elon talking about Tesla’s technology and vision. Really it does blow your mind. I’m more convinced than ever. Definitely worth the investment.

The autopilot part of Tesla is kinda science fiction at this point. The proof of the pudding will be when we can taste it.

I forgot to mention the steering. It is excellent in sport mode; offers up that driver to car to road oneness missing from so many modern drive-by-wire systems.
But again - practically- having to detour out of your way and then hang out at a charger for 30 minutes or more - just too much of a pain. And on real short trips - the weeks groceries say - your ride doesn’t much matter.

Well it doesn’t take much to beat a Ford.
If it is a sure thing, then there’s no point in betting the farm. Might as well buy the FANGs and go slow and steady.

Autopilot is a percentage of their business.
I am talking about FSD and robotaxis that could lead them to a $1 trillion market cap.

manch:
Bet you $10 they won’t.
I go to Vegas for shows and food i.e. I’m not a betting person.
However my view is the rollout will be much smoother this time as compared to 3.

To me at this point it’s hard to see it in near future , i.e. Level 5 autonomous, although Tesla is spending a lot of money to develop neural network chips for it, so I hope you’re correct in your prediction.

Following is the reason he made that comment.
Introduced in 1948, the Ford F-150 owns the distinction of being the most popular motor vehicle of all time. For well over 30 years, the F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States. F
It’s not my prediction. It’s Tesla’s and the analysts at Ark’s.

They have an outsized investment in TSLA, so they will always be a cheerleader and not be very objective.
