Just checked Amazon again. Still tons of laptops for sale. Hurry up and buy one now, and get it in your hands on Monday.

there are tons of huawei phones also for sale.
We are short of 5 million laptops and old laptops repairs are getting expensive. so who is losing?
what is more important for stay at home study and work
Laptop or Phone?
Anywhere in supply chain phone production can stop. depend how hard the game is played.

Yes, still plenty of Huawei phones for sale today. Those were made before US sanctions. Huawei also stockpiled a ton of components. Those will last for three to six months. After that? Game over.

There were news stories about US thinking about putting SMIC, China’s biggest fab, on entity list. Its stock crashed 20% on the news. If the US goes ahead, no more 14nm for China.

I don’t know where these laptop shortages come from when anyone can just go on Amazon and buy one today. Don’t know about you, but $500 a laptop seems pretty reasonable to me.

Think thru which pieces are essential and irreplaceable, which pieces not.

No one can bulk order same standard specifications and expect delivery.
Huawei moving ahead with its own OS across line up.
. .
China can always can count on Europeans to put decisive pressure to save there own business.
This year is soft pressure. next year will be different. When trade war cranks up than Powell will have dump trillions to save stock market.

@manch

Told you Mark playing dirty approach will backfire. He may be smart business- and tech-wise, is he politically wise?

Facebook can just store Ireland user data in the EU. What’s the big deal? Doesn’t mean European users can’t connect with American users.

What’s the alternative to Facebook?

We have such country specific rules across the world, esp China, Russia, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, India, Euro (italy, spain…etc) & USA secure the data within that country.

There are simple solutions for this. Facebook will have have to segregate country specific data and store it in local data server. This just costs additional expense and a project of 1 to 3 months depending on data usage.

@hanera, such rules are common to all companies such as apple, amazon, google, microsoft…etc

These are not social networking businesses. How do I share my talk cock with Singaporeans? Everything I post in FB are my personal info! Trying to be cheeky? Cache is ok? Third party accelerating platform is ok? As far as I am concerned, so long Singaporeans can read my stuff, is same as storing my info in Singapore server.

Country specific restrictions are very common, they may time to time apply such restrictions. Big Companies like FB can easily handle such requirements as they may have data centers across the world to cater the services.

See here how FB network is spread => The social network now has data center campuses around the globe, including nine in the U.S. and three in international markets. Facebook has nearly 15 million square feet of data center space completed or under construction, with several million more feet in the planning stages.

It has Ireland DC too.

It is about control. EU wants US tech giants to invest in EU infrastructure, train people and they will ultimately take over through taxes, labor and cyber security laws. There is no Powell in Europe that is boosting stock based compenstation of software firms.

they are encouraging to invest. think over it. Consider past history of AMD in Europe.

I don’t think you get what I am saying. In social networking, Singaporeans are supposed to be able to access my personal info (my photos, my posts, my friends, some profile). The way WWW works is my info would have to be replicated in caches along the way i.e. not just stored in America servers.

Do you have any difficulty now connecting with your SG friends on Facebook? I don’t think you even use Facebook? You should learn from PM Lee’s wife. Heard she’s a power user.

The EU only wants more oversight on Facebook’s business. They are not going to prevent Europeans from interacting with people from other regions. EU is not China.

What talk you? Not talking about having difficulties currently. Future possibility!!! Future possibility!!! Follow the discussion.

I am saying there is no such future possibility. Case closed.

EU is much tougher than China. it is just they havent invested in Software/Cyber to get the degree of control. It is just matter of time… they are learning from Russia who has similar VK and Telegram.

Europe is a spent force. If they are capable of producing google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple they would have produced them already.

Apple’s market cap alone is bigger than the entire FTSE 100. Germany’s DAX 30 only has one tech company: SAP.

Dream on.

I doubt Europe is interested in creating mega cap zombie firms as it will pollute politics through wealth concentrated in people who know nothing more than typing on computer. Politicians are reflection of donor class.
how you going to attract best people to Aerospace/Railway/Civil/Mechanical engineering when salaries are lopsided in favor of Software?
Europe atleast know how to fight fires and keep water and environment clean.

remember Volvo exports from China
now Tesla want to repeat.

I hope all our competitors take up your obsession with century old technology and leave the new tech entirely to us. Who needs AI when you are master of laying rails, an 18th century technology?

There are some countries that restrict all access and all companies operate in that country must comply. This is the issue with country, may affect operations of business. However, companies like FB survive such winds, not a major issue as long as revenue stream from that country is small.
